Dr. Jen Ashton encourages social media fast

On Tuesday’s broadcast of GMA3: What You Need to Know, Dr. Jen Ashton shared the benefits of a social media fast. More younger people are ditching their smartphones and investing in flip phones instead. The effects of social media are detrimental to one’s mental health. The physician admitted that she was considering making this change herself.

It’s the reason why she left Twitter. In the segment, Dr. Jen brought mentioned a study conducted by American Physicological Foundation that was published in the Psychology of Popular Media Journal. The participants who reduced their social media usage noticed an improvement in their weight and appearance.

“They looked at people 17 to 25 years of age, about 200 of them,” Dr. Jen Ashton explained. “[They] gave one group unlimited social media access, the other one restricted to one hour a day. And some might argue even one hour is a lot.”

They also noticed a “50% improvement in their subject feelings of mental illness.” The participants experienced “less anxiety” and an “improved sense of body image.” Dr. Jen also feels that children would greatly benefit from this since social media has been shown to be “detrimental to their mental health.” She admitted that she’s trying to step back from social media.

GMA3 co-host leaving social media?

Last year, Dr. Jen Ashton announced that she was leaving Twitter. Her co-host, Rhiannon  Ally, admitted that she couldn’t tag her on the social media app. Dr. Jen confirmed that she left both TikTok and Twitter. Rhiannon mentioned that she doesn’t spend a lot of time on Instagram.

“Drop that timer to five minutes and see how you feel,” Dr. Jen Ashton shared. “But be curious with yourself and whether or not you see a connection in your mood. Because this is not just young adults. It’s adults of all ages. And as I said, you know, we’re not even fully aware of the changes in our psychological processes that can go on with social media.”

She admitted that she might fully commit to the challenge and leave social media altogether. This revelation came as a shock to GMA fans who love to keep up with her on Instagram. They flocked to the comment section of her latest post to tell her to stay.

  • “Yes there is a lot of negativity… but there is good as well.”
