‘House Of The Dragon’ Misses A Major Mark In Its Debut Week
Game Of Thrones prequel House Of The Dragon premiered on August 21, 2022, and is currently four episodes in. HBO airs one episode every Sunday. Its first episode made it to the last few hours of Nielsen’s weekly SVOD window for August 15-21. Yet, in this brief time frame, the prequel bagged a watch time of 327 Million minutes via the HBO Max platform.
House Of The Dragon Didn’t Make It To Nielsen’s Top 10
This Nielsen-provided figure only includes the viewership bagged in from the streaming platform. So, it doesn’t include those from HBO’s linear channel or any other platform that airs House Of The Dragon.

Nielsen’s streaming report for the August 15-21 window stated, “As you might notice, the premiere episode of ‘House Of The Dragon’ on HBO Max did not make the Top 10 lists this week. Nielsen measurement is based on a ‘Monday through Sunday’ week, which means the HBO release schedule for ‘House Of The Dragon’ only provides a 3-hour window (Eastern Time) to accumulate viewing minutes during this initial week. As an addendum to this week’s list, we wanted to share that Episode 1 of ‘House Of The Dragon’ received 327 million viewing minutes. We expect it to settle in as a regular over the coming weeks.”
Game Of Thrones Had A 559 Million Minutes Watch Time
Nielsen publishes the streaming data several weeks after its seven-day count window. So, it is possible that the series might debut in the Top 10 list next week when the numbers for the August 22-28 window come out. For example, as per Nielsen, Game Of Thrones has all 8 seasons and 73 episodes available for streaming on HBO Max. It has a watch time of 559 Million minutes between the August 15-21 window.

However, if you take a look at HBO’s very own tally that counts viewers as opposed to minutes, the prequel premiere was seen by almost 10 million viewers on its debut night. As opposed to Nielsen’s streaming ratings, HBO’s stats take into account all the platforms on which the show is available.
House Of The Dragon Premiere Episode Crosses 30 Million Viewers
As per Variety, this week, HBO revealed that Episode 1 has crossed the 30 million viewers mark. The network also confirmed that the initial viewership for Episode 2 increased by 2 percent as compared to the premiere episode.

Created by Ryan Condal and George R.R. Martin, House Of Dragon is also based on A Song Of Ice And Fire novels similar to Game Of Thrones. This prequel is set about 200 years before the events shown in Game Of Thrones and 172 years prior to Daenerys Targaryen’s birth. It details the start of the end of House Targaryen and the events that lead to the ‘Targaryen War Of Succession’ (Dance Of The Dragons).
