‘Saturday Night Live’ Losing Three More In ‘Year Of Change’
Lorne Michaels has said that Saturday Night Live’s 47th season will be what he calls a “year of change.” Some major cast members already announced they are leaving the show, and the departures aren’t slowing down.
Three more cast members are reportedly leaving Saturday Night Live and here is what you need to know.
Saturday Night Live losing three cast members
Through the entire summer, fans have been wondering if major stars are leaving Saturday Night Live before next season. In May, they announced three major names to be leaving the show. These were Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant, and Kyle Mooney. They joined the previously announced Pete Davidson, who is also departing the show.
Now, there are three more names added to the list. Deadline reported that Alex Moffat, Melissa Villaseñor, and Aristotle Athari are all leaving the show.
Alex Moffat joined Saturday Night Live in 2016 and received a promotion to the main cast in 2018. He took over the role of playing President Joe Biden in 2020, taking over the role that Jim Carrey previously held. His most popular recurring character was The Guy Who Just Bought a Boat, a guy who gives dating advice but talks about how bad his sex life is.
Melissa Villaseñor also joined the cast in 2016. She was the second Latina cast member after Noël Wells. Melissa is mostly an impressionist and has done versions of everyone, from Björk and Christina Aguilera to Britney Spears and Macaulay Culkin. She has also gotten the chance to do voice work for Disney, voicing Taffyta Muttonfudge in Ralph Breaks the Internet and Karen Beverly in Toy Story 4.
Aristotle Athari only joined Saturday Night Live last season, making him a one-year star before departing the show. He was the first Middle-Eastern male on the show and the second Iranian-American cast member in the show’s history.
What is changing for Saturday Night Live?
Fans have been wondering what Saturday Night Live will look like next season. With the names leaving, there are now seven main cast members departing the show. Fans are also wondering what will happen to Michael Che, who is rumored to be wrapping things up there. Also, Kenan Thompson has been on the show longer than anyone, and his time might be coming to an end soon as well.
However, Lorne Michaels already said changes were coming. It is not a surprise either since last season had a massive cast with 21 stars and eight cast members who were entering their eighth season or beyond. Tha is the largest cast in show history. Evern with seven people leaving, there are still 14 people in the cast, and it might be time for Saturday Night Live to tighten things up like it used to be when people knew who they would see each and every week.
Lindsay Shookus, a producer and head of its talent department, also left after 20 seasons.
