‘Dancing With The Stars’ Pros Chime In On Elimination Controversy
Many Dancing With The Stars fans are a little puzzled about how eliminations work this season. This year there are four judges, which means there can be a 2/2 split during eliminations. If this happens, DWTS head judge Len Goodman gets the final say.
If you were a little confused during the last two weeks, hopefully this clears things up a bit.
Len Goodman opted to save Brandon Armstrong and Kenya Moore during DWTS Disney Week and Val Chmerkovskiy and Olivia Jade during Grease Night. His decision sent fan favorites Matt James and Lindsay Arnold home during Disney Week and Mel C and Gleb Savchenko home the next episode.
Most people were really confused during the Disney Week elimination, but most seemed to catch on by Grease Night.
Dancing With The Stars pro dancers chime in on the situation
However, the internet is split. Is this really a fair way to decide who to save and who to send home? Even the pro dancers and celebrity castmates have mixed opinions.
“I think what formula we have now definitely works,” reigning champ Artem Chigvintsev told Us Weekly. “Is there another formula that I think would maybe work better and people will feel better about it? Yes, I do think there is an option of, let’s say, there’s a bottom two. If the judges can’t decide who to send home, then it should be going into the voting system. Who got the most votes? … Let’s break it down to who got the most votes because then it’s fair square. Then it gets to the point, you can’t be mad at this, because it is decided then. The audience becomes a fifth judge in a sense.”
But others feel like the system actually works.
“I actually don’t mind it,” Cheryl Burke told Us. “Do I think that it’s confusing this season? Maybe a little bit because there are four judges, but I didn’t realize until recently that Len’s vote is considered as two votes. I don’t know if that was explained or not.”
Last year, Len Goodman chose not to appear on the show due to COVID-19 concerns. That meant there were three judges and there wouldn’t be a tie when it came to eliminations. A simple majority ruled.
Many still feel that the judges are doing their best to keep the competition fair
But even so, most DWTS cast members believe that the judges earnestly have everyone’s best interests at heart.
“I like the chance to save somebody from the judges’ perspectives because I do feel like they have our best interests at heart, and I do feel like they can see all the hard work and the dedication and everything that we’re trying to pour our heart and souls into it,” Witney Carson added. “So I do like that they can save somebody. I think it’s hard because there are four of them. … He’s the head judge and I feel like so far, I don’t know if he’s made the right decisions. I don’t know. … It’s such a close call. I think anything that he does right now is going to have a little bit of backlash.”
