Virginia Teacher Shot By 6-Year-Old Suing For $40 Million
A Virginia teacher found herself shot by a six-year-old in a classroom back in 2023. Recently, she is pursuing legal action, suing the school’s former assistant principal. In addition, she has also recounted what the horrific incident was like firsthand.
The Teacher Had To Undergo Six Surgeries Following The Incident
Back in early January 2023, Abby Zwerner was working at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia. However, she found herself in a dangerous situation when a six-year-old brought a pistol into the school.
At the time, Zwerner was shot while she sat at a reading table in a first-grade classroom. Zwerner survived the incident but underwent around two weeks of treatment in the hospital, including six surgeries.

A bullet just missed her heart and remains in her chest. She also doesn’t have the full use of her hand. At the time, the shooting sparked much discussion in the country, with many wondering about how such a young child even managed to bring a gun into a school.
As noted by the Associated Press, Zwerner recently testified that, “I thought I had died. I thought I was either on my way to heaven or in heaven. But then it all got black.”
“And so, I then thought I wasn’t going there. And then my next memory is I see two co-workers around me and I process that I’m hurt and they’re putting pressure on where I’m hurt.”
The Former Assistant Principal Is Also Facing Counts Of Felony Child Neglect
Zwerner is now involved in a $40 million lawsuit against a former assistant principal, Ebony Parker, who was accused of ignoring multiple warnings over the student having a gun. Reportedly, several people voiced concerns to her about a student having a gun in his backpack hours before the incident.
Zwerner no longer works for the school district and shared that she has no plans to get back into teaching. In a court appearance this past Wednesday, she shared that she had become a licensed cosmetologist.

Looking back at the incident, Zwerner shared, “The moment went by very fast.” In spite of her injuries, she reportedly managed to evacuate her students out of the classroom. Eventually, she passed out in a school office.
Parker is the only defendant in the lawsuit. A judge had also dismissed the district’s superintendent and the school principal as defendants. In addition, Parker also faces a separate, upcoming criminal trial, facing eight counts of felony child neglect.
The student ‘s mother was also sentenced to nearly four years in prison, having faced charges of felony child neglect and federal weapons charges. The student previously told authorities he got his mother’s pistol by climbing a drawer to reach a dresser, with the gun in his mother’s purse.
