North Carolina Service Dog Saves Diabetic Boy’s Life
Service dogs have been known to pull off some heroics when it comes to their humans. Based on a story coming out of North Carolina, a service dog saved the life of a 5-year-old boy with diabetes. So, what happened with this situation, and what did this service dog do?

Service dogs provide a vital service for their families, and many of these dogs continue to save lives in the United States. There are often stories about service dogs helping owners who are blind navigate the outside world. In addition to this, you often read stories about service dogs alerting their owners before someone has a seizure.
These dogs provide a vital service, and many of them regularly save lives. According to recent estimates from Total Vet, there are approximately 500k service dogs currently working around the United States. Only the best and brightest dogs are even given the title of service dog, as up to 70 percent of dogs in these programs don’t graduate because of behavioral issues. So, if you or someone you know gets a service dog, you know that you are getting one of the absolute best.
Service Dog Saves Boy In North Carolina
Based on the latest updates making the rounds from PEOPLE, in October 2025, a woman named Aubrie Lewis was early picking up her 5-year-old son from preschool. The family’s 2-year-old cocker spaniel named Ducky was along for the car ride.
Ducky (the dog) also serves as the family’s diabetic alert dog (DAD) for the boy. The mother arrived early with the dog, and parked in the parking lot. While waiting, Ducky the dog began staring at the mother “intently.” Out of curiosity, the mother checked her son’s glucose numbers, which she can monitor on her phone and dashboard.
When she checked the numbers, she realized that her son’s blood sugar had slipped to 84. Even though the dog is trained to alert when the boy’s blood sugar dips below a certain point, the fact that Ducky managed to do this from a distance was remarkable.

According to PEOPLE, “Although Ducky is trained to alert when Wells’ number falls below 85 or over 175, Lewis couldn’t imagine the dog could sense that while waiting outside the school, windows rolled up and nowhere near her son. Moments later, to her astonishment, Ducky climbed onto the front seat and gave a clear, unmistakable alert. ‘He was trained with saliva samples and alerts me by nose nudging me.”
Aubrie went on to say, “Ducky never really fails to amaze me. I trust him and his nose more than anything else.”
