Massachusetts School Worker Killed While Trying To Restrain Teen

An employee at a Massachusetts school for youth with mental health issues lost their life after a confrontation with a teenage student. The teenage girl, who reportedly attempted to leave the school’s dorm without permission, is now facing charges over the incident. The school and a friend of the employee have also since released statements over what happened.

The Massachusetts School Is Dedicated To Helping Young People With Mental Health, Behavioral, & Trauma Issues

Amy Morrell was a staff member at Meadowridge Academy. This residential therapeutic school in Swansea aims to help youth and young adults with mental health concerns, trauma histories, and behavioral concerns.

On Wednesday, around 6:55 PM local time, there was an incident concerning a student at the school. The student, described as a 14-year-old girl, reportedly attempted to leave the dormitory without permission.

During the altercation, Morrell lost her life during the altercation, as she and other staff members tried to restrain the teen. According to The New York Times, the Bristol County district attorney, Thomas M. Quinn III, shared that Morrell “was kicked in the chest by the juvenile… Shortly after being struck, the victim collapsed.”

Following this, employees reportedly performed CPR. Morrell was then taken to a local hospital. She was pronounced dead on Thursday, being 53 at the time of her death.

After an initial investigation, the teenage girl was charged with assault and battery, causing serious bodily injury. She was arraigned on Thursday the Fall River Juvenile Court. The girl has not been publicly named following the incident due to her age.

A Friend Of Morrell’s Also Spoke About Her Following What Happened

Officers from Swansea’s own police department and detectives from the Massachusetts State Police reportedly arrived at the scene during the time of the incident. Reportedly, the investigation into what happened is still ongoing.

According to the outlet, the school has also issued a statement concerning what happened: “The Meadowridge Academy community is deeply saddened by the passing of direct care staff member, Amy Morrell.” The statement was reportedly shared by the school’s partner, the Justice Resource Institute, which was described as “a human services provider in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut.”

At this time, the school has also not shared Morrell’s role at the school or how long she had been employed there. Her Facebook page shared she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in human services with mental health at the University of Maine, Orono, back in 1996.

Speaking with ABC Boston affiliate WCVB, a friend of Morrell’s, Andrew Ferruche, also expressed shock over what happened in a statement. He shared, “I couldn’t believe when I got the call today. It’s just a tragic situation.”

Ferruche also highlighted Morrell as someone who loved her work. He continued, “She did tell me on more than one occasion she did love what she was doing.”
