In a sad and terrifying recent update from Baxley, Georgia, an 86-year-old grandmother was mauled to death by dogs, allegedly belonging to a neighbor. So, what happened with this situation, and what do we know about everything that went down?

Dog Attacks Are Fairly Common In The United States

While dogs have lived alongside humans for thousands of years, at the end of the day, even though they are domesticated, they are still animals with animal instincts. While most dogs tend to be loyal and loving toward their families, that is not always the case when it comes to strangers.

If dogs get loose, they can end up attacking people, and in some cases, these attacks prove to be fatal. According to statistics from Dogs Bite, “Each day nearly 1,000 U.S. citizens require emergency care treatment for serious dog bite injuries. Annually, about 12,480 citizens are hospitalized due to dog bite injuries.”

From these statistics, since 2011 in the United States, there has been an average of 43 to 56 deaths per year from dog attacks, with 2021 seeing a particular surge in these deaths, with 81.
