South Carolina Man Hid 4 Adults In Basement For Decade
A South Carolina man allegedly kidnapped four adults and hid them in his basement for roughly ten years. He then went on to spend their money while they were in captivity. Thirty-five-year-old Donnie Ray Birchfield Jr. hid these four individuals in his basement. No one knew what was happening until one of his hostages passed away. That was when things became murky and suspicious, leading to an investigation being opened in July 2025. Donnie was arrested in August, and what the authorities found was mind-blowing and terrifying.
A woman died in his home, and apparently, he was caretaking for her and her husband. It is unknown how he came to meet the couple, and what their affiliation is. However, it seems that the victim was not getting the medical help that she needed. More so, she had been physically abused at the time of her passing. After she died, and this was reported, authorities inspected Donnie’s home. It was then that they saw that he had more people in his basement and was controlling their every move. This included their food, how they spoke, and more.
These hostages were kept in the home by Donnie against their will, with one being brought in a decade ago. The latest came into the basement in 2024. To add insult to injury, the South Carolina pastor’s son allegedly blew the captives’ money on a regular basis. He paid his debts while taking shopping trips to Walmart. Moreover, the couple he was the caretaker of were robbed of $11,800 in 2025 by Richie for his personal benefit. Donnie’s neighbor said this of him:
“That’s a sick individual right there. He’s a sick person to do something like that.”
A Suspicious Past
Donnie Ray Birchfield Jr. has a history of suspicious behavior. His girlfriend detailed things he had said, such as disposing of a body as he had done before. Furthermore, he made her scared that she would not live to see another day. Lastly, Donnie had strangled her when he would become aggressive, and that was terrifying. As to why she never said anything is unclear. Pathology holds more answers for the case, and that is something everyone is waiting on. For now, Donnie is being held in a South Carolina prison, and followers of the story are blown away by the details:
