‘General Hospital’ Maurice Benard Reveals Future On Soap
Actor Maurice Benard has been part of General Hospital for over 30 years. Thanks to this, the soap star has also been subject to retirement rumors over the years. Recently, Benard himself has opened up about his own vision of the future on the soap.
Maurice Benard Talked About What His Future On General Hospital Could Be Like During A Recent Interview
Benard first joined the cast of General Hospital in 1993 as the kingpin Sonny Corinthos, after previously appearing on All My Children. Initially, the role was only supposed to last a few months, but Benard ended up staying in the role for ensuing decades.
In addition, Benard is also known for hosting the State of Mind podcast. While discussing topics like mental health, Benard also regularly interviews various soap opera alumni.

Benard has also recently appeared on the Soapy podcast. During the appearance, host Rebecca Budig brought up a few long-running actors on soaps, including The Bold and the Beautiful‘s John McCook and The Young and the Restless‘ Eric Braeden, both of whom continue to work in their 80s.
Benard was then asked if he would similarly continue to play Sonny for decades to come. The actor shared, “I don’t know, in all honesty, if I can last that long and not because I don’t want to.”
“People are going to get mad at me for saying this, but I’m always just going to be honest. I don’t think mentally if I can keep going that long, and I don’t know if I could act on GH if I’m not at least at 90 percent. That’s the truth.”
During The Conversation, Benard Also Touched On What Could Have Been If He Wasn’t An Actor
The actor continued, “Right now, I’m 62. Maybe another couple of years, three years, and then we’ll see what happens.”
Host Greg Rikaart also shared he felt that Benard should do what’s best for him. Benard added that he’ll know when it’s time to retire, saying, “I’ll know from mental health.”

The General Hospital star was also asked about what he would do if he wasn’t working as an actor. “I’d say a boxer or a lawyer. I always wanted to be a lawyer.”
When asked, Benard noted that he didn’t mean just playing a lawyer on television. When asked about who he’d like to represent, he mused, “Don’t get me started on this stuff.” He also shared he was a fan of Dateline, 20/20, and Netflix documentaries.
