Tragically, media personality Mama June endured the loss of her daughter Anna in 2023. Since then, there have been custody concerns over Anna’s daughter Kaitlyn. A Custody Battle Was The Focus Of Mama June: Family Crisis‘ 100th Episode
Fans were first introduced to members of the Shannon family, including matriarch Mama June, through the TLC series Toddlers & Tiaras. Over the years, the family had been the focus of various reality series. This includes Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, which revolved around Alana Thompson, and the We TV Mama June series.
June’s oldest daughter Anna passed away in December of 2023 after being diagnosed with stage 4 adrenal cancer. Anna was survived by her daughter, Kaitlyn Elizabeth, who was born in 2012.
Recently, Kaitlyn’s custody came up on a recent episode of Mama June’s series. Previously, Anna’s former husband Michael Cardwell sought primary custody of Kaitlyn, despite not being her biological father.
During the 100th episode of the show, June shared in a confessional, “Let me explain the court case to y’all. It is Michael, Anna’s ex, versus myself for custody of Kaitlyn.” June also explained that a “new Georgia law” allowed Michael to pursue custody as he has financially contributed to Kaitlyn’s finances.
A Judge Made A Ruling Over The Case This Past September
June and her husband, Justin Shroud, prepared Kaitlyn for a court appearance, set to take place the next morning. For her part, Kaitlyn appeared nervous and admitted the situation “sucks.”
In another confessional, June also shared, “I really ain’t ready to deal with Michael’s dumba** s***. But I know he’s going to bring up my freaking past.”

The legal case previously concluded on September 20, 2024. At the time, the judge ruled in June’s favor, granting her primary custody. According to In Touch Weekly, court documents read that, “Legal and physical custody of the minor child is to remain with [Mama June] and [Michael] will have no right to visitation as such, unless otherwise agreed to by the parties and the minor child.”
June had talked to the publication about the situation, noting that she wished things didn’t have to be resolved with a court case. She shared, “I would just, like, be screaming. Like, I wish that they would just, like, sit down and come talk to us. I wish they would just sit down ’cause it did not have to go into a court battle or anything like that. It could have been a very civil situation.”
June also shared an update concerning her granddaughter. As she revealed, “She’s doing very good. She just started a new school three months ago and we just moved into a new house.”
Anna had also shared a daughter, Kylee, with Michael, who also helped raise Kaitlyn. Kylee is currently living with Michael full-time following her mother’s passing.
