HGTV Turning Into MTV Amid Chip & Joanna Gaines Exit?

Is HGTV evolving into MTV with the departure of Fixer Upper stars Chip and Joanna Gaines? They have their own Magnolia network, but could they be ruining the renovation and gardening network? Keep reading for all of the details.
HGTV Turning Into MTV
A lot is happening on HGTV, and it is a big switch for fans and viewers. They started loving the network for the home renovation reality shows that were engrossing and transformative. There was also a lot of outdoor content, so it appealed to those who loved seeing professionals work their magic. Moreover, it gave followers incredible decorating ideas, and the hosts became everyday celebrities. As time has gone on, the network has had to change with the times, and that means switching up the programming. Rather than air reruns during peak times, movies were aired, which was odd but something the network felt was necessary.

Furthermore, some new shows are not making it beyond a sophomore season. They do not have the appeal to go very far, unlike Ben and Erin Napier and Chip and Joanna Gaines. The latter have gone off to launch their own network, plus a line of home goods at Target. Therefore, what was once standard for the network is shifting, which is similar to MTV. Originally, the music network was all about VJs and music videos, but over time, it started to integrate reality shows. The Real World started it all, and now, there is Teen Mom, Catfish, and Jersey Shore.

Music videos play a very small role in MTV, and that seems to be just fine with viewers, as Jersey Shore celebrates its 15th anniversary:
- If this show ends then there’s no mtv
- This show will ALWAYS be so iconic & worth watching ! 🔥🔥🔥
- Literally checked yesterday to see when the new season coming!
So, is HGTV going in the way of MTV, where it is doing less home renovations and more outside programming? Admittedly, things changed when the Gaines’ exited, and divorce struck a fan favorite couple.
The Demise Of HGTV
Chip and Joanna Gaines helped to define HGTV, as did Tarek El Moussa and Christina Haack. Unfortuntely, the latter ended up getting divorced but has still tried to keep their brand going. Seeing how much things have evolved since the network first took off, it makes sense that they would go with the times. They welcomed Teen Mom alum Chelsea Houska DeBoer and her husband, Cole DeBoer, in their own series, Down Home Fab. Rock the Block has also been successful, so some shows will continue to thrive.

Christina Haack, like Chip and Joanna, has branched out and has her own champagne line, which fans are thrilled about. It is unclear how much longer she will stick with HGTV with all of her projects ahead. For now, the network will keep trying new things to see what works.
Do you understand why HGTV looks like it is following MTV’s track with its changing programming? More so, do you think it is smart for them to integrate movies and various shows? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
