A CBS News president and CEO has announced their resignation. The news has come out as another prominent executive producer stepped down weeks prior. This also comes out as CBS’ parent company, Paramount, is involved with a lawsuit from President Donald Trump over a 2024 60 Minutes interview featuring Kamala Harris.

The Former CBS CEO Shared Their Decision In A Memo

The CBS CEO recently issued a memo sharing their decision to step down from their position at the network. In their message, the former CEO also talked about the challenges impacting the network over the past few months.

This comes out as the network has been impacted by other recent events. This includes another figure stepping down, a lawsuit, and a possible merger.

According to Deadline, the former CEO, Wendy McMahon, issued a message to the company in a memo dated May 19. As she wrote, “Championing and supporting the journalism produced by the most amazing stations and bureaus in the world, celebrating the successes of our shows and our brands, elevating our stories and our people … It has been a privilege and joy.”

“At the same time, the past few months have been challenging. It’s become clear that the company and I do not agree on the path forward. It’s time for me to move on and for this organization to move forward with new leadership.”

McMahon’s exit comes out as the network has been working on a settlement with President Donald Trump’s team over a $20 billion lawsuit. The suit was filed over a 60 Minutes interview with Kamala Harris and the way it was edited.

This takes place as Paramount Global is seeking to complete a merger with Skydance. The company will need regulatory approval from Trump’s administration to move forward.

One Anonymous Staffer Claimed The News Wasn’t Too Surprising

As the publication noted, McMahon was a defender of the news division amid the suit. A month prior, Bill Owens, the executive producer of 60 Minutes, previously exited his role, amid claims of corporate interference.

With Owen’s departure, staff at the network had expected there to be more exits as the network tried to settle the deal with Skydance. One anonymous senior staffer claimed McMahon’s exit wasn’t too much of a surprise following Owens’ exit. They noted, “It indicates that they are probably closer to a settlement.”

George Cheeks, co-CEO for Paramount Global and president and CEO of CBS, has also since issued a memo. Reportedly, CBS News president Tom Cibrowski and CBS Stations president Jennifer Mitchell will now report to him. He also claimed McMahon would remain with the network for a few more weeks to aid in “the transition.”

Cheeks noted, “In a rapidly changing world, Wendy and her teams have worked diligently to articulate a vision and lay a foundation that adapts our news operations for the future. This includes advancements in data journalism, community journalism, technology and centralizing editorial decisions to help teams move faster.”

McMahon previously worked with ABC, leaving the network in 2021 to become the co-president of CBS News and Stations. In 2023, she would be announced as the sole president and CEO of CBS News and Stations following the resignation of Neeraj Khemlani.
