Why Dolly Parton Refuses To Be An Idol Judge
Dolly Parton is an icon, and anyone would be lucky to get advice from her. She is an inspiration to many and big into philanthropy. Yet, she would never be a judge on the hit reality singing competition, American Idol. When they were looking to replace Katy Perry, many popular names were floated around. This included Dolly’s goddaughter, Miley Cyrus. In the end, Season 4 winner Carrie Underwood took the spot, but not everyone was convinced she was the right choice. Could Dolly have been a hit had she agreed to do the show?
She was previously on Idol in Season 7 as a guest mentor. That was when the top nine performed Dolly’s song, so it was a very special night. Along with AI, Dolly could have been a coach on The Voice. She was also a mentor there for two seasons, nine and eleven. Apparently, the opportunity to be on either reality series was offered to her, but she declined. Yet, what was her reasoning for not coming on and helping rising talent? Per Dolly, her conscious would not allow it:
“I’ve been asked to do that a lot of times. It’s too hard for me. That’s why I don’t accept it, because I know how sincere everybody is. Even if they’re not that good, they believe they are. And I just can’t hurt people.”
Dolly Parton believes in the good in everyone until they prove her otherwise. Therefore, to say “no” to American Idol and The Voice’s aspiring talent would have broken her heart.

Right now, all Dolly needs is love and positivity surrounding her. She lost the love of her life, Carl Dean, on March 3rd, 2025, so she is still recovering from that trauma.

Although Dolly Parton would likely be perfect on American Idol or The Voice, it is not her gig to shut down dreams. That makes a lot of sense, but fans still adore her no matter what. This is why everyone loves Dolly.
