Blue Bloods fans can get excited because the series has a new expansion. While it won’t be making its comeback with the same title, an offshoot under a new name is on its way. It will show Donnie Wahlberg returning to screens with a change of scenery.

Donnie Wahlberg Is On The Move

In December, Blue Bloods fans were saddened as the long-running series came to a close. But now,  CBS has announced that they have a straight-to-series order that is a “Blue Bloods Universe expansion.” Additionally, the news comes with a familiar face joining the cast, Donnie Wahlberg. However, there is a big location change for the tentatively titled new series, Boston Blue.

Introducing Boston Blue

In the Boston Blue series, Donnie Wahlberg’s character, Danny Reagan, will be relocating to the Boston Police Department. With the new city, Danny also will have a new partner, Detective Lena Peters. She is the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family at his new job. Blue Bloods fans can expect to see this new addition on CBS during the 2025-2026 TV season. Joining Donnie are Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis. Fans may recognize these stars from The Blacklist, L.A.’s Finest, and Alert: MPU. Sonnier and Margolis are both showrunners for the new series. Furthermore, Sonnier and Margolis will join Donnie Wahlberg, Jerry Bruckheimer, and KristieAnne Reed as executive producers. While Boston Blue is an offshoot of Blue Bloods, it was never intended to be a “spin-off.”

Donnie Wahlberg Was The Perfect Fusion For Boston Blue

As Blue Bloods came to a close, Donnie Wahlberg seemed like the perfect person to cast in a newly proposed series in Donnie’s old neck of the woods since he grew up in the Dorchester neighborhood in Boston. The network had passed on one spin-off that considered moving Danny to Texas.

When Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis developed a great plan for a series that would follow a family of cops in Boston whose eldest daughter is partnered with a new transfer from LAPD, CBS had a brilliant idea. They thought of building Donnie Wahlberg’s character, Danny Reagan, into the script. This was as simple as CBS and CBS Studios’ creative team agreeing to change the “LAPD transplant” character to Blue Bloods NYPD’s character, Danny Reagan. Then, Danny was a seamless crossover to segway into the expanded universe.

Blue Blood Fans Most Likely Will Welcome Donnie Wahlberg’s New Role

At the end of Blue Bloods, fans showed up in droves to see Tom Selleck, Donnie Wahlberg, Will Estes, Bridget Moynahan, Len Cariou, and many other beloved stars portray the end of the era for the long-running show. According to VideoAmp Overnight data, the Blue Bloods series finale averaged 6.7 million viewers. This was the Season 14 high. Undoubtedly, Blue Bloods will be missed, but perhaps Boston Blue might gain a place in many of the previous viewers’ hearts.

  1. If this is true, I will be delighted. Lots of people say lots of things but somehow it doesn’t always come to fruition. I will get excited when the series starts and last for fourteen years. This is probably a scam setting us up for a huge disappointment. I have my doubts.

  2. This sounds great, I’m looking forward to it. Another cop family with Danny Reagan involved has potential. As a long time fan of Blue Bloods, I hope this works. It won’t be the same but could be almost as good, I hope.

  3. I have watched BLUE BLOOD from the beginning, and am absolutely excited about the returned abeviated version of Blue Blood.
