The Jeopardy! Wildcard Tournament has been an interesting journey for many players. Those who win get to move on to the semifinals. Those who lose, but have the most money get to move on as well. However, one champion, Joey DeSena, said he made an embarrassing error thanks to the Final Jeopardy! round.

Here is what Joey had to say about what happened in the tournament.

Jeopardy! Champion Comments On ‘Embarrassing’ Error

In the Jeopardy! Wildcard Tournament game that involved champion Joe DeSena, things got a little tense. Even Ken Jennings, one of the best players in the game show’s history, admitted that the final question was too difficult and made the final round impossible to complete.

Joey had won two games during the regular season and took home $46,698. In the Wildcard Tournament, the development engineer from Raleigh, North Carolina, took on Eamonn Campbell, a lawyer originally from Manchester, Vermont, and Mehal Shah, a software engineer from Seattle, Washington.

Going into Double Jeopardy!, Mehal was in first place with $6,600, while Joey was in second with $6,200, and Eamonn was in third with $2,800. However, in the next round, Joey began to struggle. There was a category that was labeled “The Jeté Set.” However, Joey said he embarrassingly didn’t realize it was about ballet until three clues in. He thought it was just about French words (via Reddit).

Despite his struggles there, Joey ended up pulling away into the lead before Final Jeopardy!

Joey Paid Respect To Jeopardy! Opposition

Joey did say that he really enjoyed playing against Mehal and Eamonn. “Nothing but respect for Mehal and Eamonn in this game. Two tremendous competitors (and more importantly, great people) that I enjoyed getting to know both during our sequestration in the morning and later on after this game,” he said.

The biggest problem was that the Final Jeopardy! question was one that even Ken Jennings said was too hard. The category was “Trees.” The clue was: “Order Arecales, this tree gets its name from Roman times, a leaf from one was placed in a victor’s hands after a contest was won.” The answer was, “What is Palm?”

Every competitor answered, “What is Laurel?”  Joey smartly bid $0 when he saw the category and ended up winning with $24,000. Mehal ended up in second place with $19,600. Eamonn bet it all and ended up at $0.

“First thing Ken said as the credits started to roll was that FJ was tough, and he didn’t know it either,” Joey said. “I can’t tell you how much better that made me feel.”
