Will The 2025 Oscars Be Canceled For The First Time Ever?

The Oscars have never been canceled before. They have been held for 96 consecutive years. The Los Angeles fires threaten the award show’s 96-year streak. Many stars are said to be watching and in the loop for the final word.

The Oscars Keeping An Eye On The Ever Changing Situation

The Academy Award committee is monitoring the situation daily to see if they will proceed with the Oscars. They are worried it may not be appropriate to have a celebration amidst the devastation happening in Los Angeles. Tom Hanks, Emma Stone, Meryl Streep, and Steven Spielberg are said to be aware of the situation involving the notorious awards ceremony. One person said:

“The board’s main concern at this time is to not look like they are celebrating while many Los Angelenos are dealing with heartbreak and unimaginable loss.”

There are 25 known deaths associated with the devastating fires sweeping across Los Angeles. The number of deaths is expected to rise as emergency personnel continue to go through the aftermath of the situation. More than 200,000 Los Angeles residents have been evacuated from their homes with over 80,000 soon to follow.

What Is Their Backup Plan?

The Oscars will not go down without a fight to keep the event in place. In the early 2000s, they introduced the idea of what to do if anything ever happened to threaten the Oscars. Currently, the destruction caused by the fires has led to a “contingency strategy” to be put in place for the Oscars to be called off. Currently, the Oscars are still supposed to take place on March 3rd. As of now, there have been no details released regarding the strategy and their plans. The plan will only come into action if there is a “life-changing event”.

Many other celebrity events have been canceled or postponed in the last three days. According to a source, “These wildfires have absolutely devastated the state, uniting everyone, from A-lister to waiter.”

What Will Happen If The Oscars Does Not Get Canceled

The committee decided that even if the Oscars Awards continue on without being canceled they will be scrapping the well-known goodie bags. These bags would have been valued at $171,000. Previously these goody bags had included very large gifts. Including but not limited to a three-night stay in the Swiss Alps, jewelry, a $1,200 barbeque grill, and beauty treatments. Many of the Oscars board members have decided that these gifts and goody bags may be in bad taste considering the ongoing situation around the area.

We have seen some of the Oscars emergency contingency plans in the past. Some of them were brought into effect after Covid. But even while most of the world was still locked down in 2021, the awards were never canceled just postponed.

Currently, it is still unknown what the board members will decide to do regarding the Oscars. It does seem as though they are taking into account the destruction and hardships those around them are facing, even if they are not personally dealing with the effects.
