Denise Richards Describes Scary Sexual Assault Experienced As A Teen
There are a lot of familiar faces on Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test Season 3. One of these belongs to Denise Richards. The actress and Real Housewives star wants to prove she belongs, and she discussed her past in the first episode. She talked about freezing up and knowing when to stand up and move forward. This came from a sexual assault when she was a teenager.
Here is what Denise said happened when she was a teen that forced her to grow up fast.
Denise Richards Freezes Up On Special Forces
The two-hour Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test Season 3 premiere aired on Wednesday night, January 8, on Fox. One of the competitors was Real Housewives star Denise Richards. During the premiere, Richards, 53, had to compete in a helicopter extraction where they had to jump from a boat onto a helicopter and push themselves into the cabin.
When preparing for this test, Richards had a chance to talk briefly about her past. She said she came onto the show because she wanted to learn how to not be overwhelmed by fear. “I’ve been through traumatic situations that have been very terrifying for me,” she said. “I want to learn how to deal with those issues and be stronger” (via PEOPLE).
She failed the challenge because she couldn’t lift herself into the helicopter’s cabin. The DS brought her in to discuss how she looked like “a deer in the headlights” when she tried to do it. Richards said that she was out of her comfort zone. She also said she wasn’t “petrified,” but she was “emotional.”
“I’m completely overcome by certain fearful situations, and I want to learn how to stay calm and do something,” Denise said. She then explained part of the reason for her wanting to overcome her fears.
Denise Richards Was Sexually Assaulted When She Was 15
Denise said she wanted to do this reality TV show because she has been in situations where she freezes up. She says it causes her not to function, and she can’t even speak to protect herself.
Denise mentioned the time that she was riding to the set of a shoot with her husband, Aaron Phypers. She said that someone started shooting at their truck. “I sat on the floor and was just literally, I peed, I was so scared… I froze.”
Although that event was widely reported, Denise then discussed something a little more personal from years before. “The first time I ever experienced that I was 15 and I noticed a man following me,” she said. “He came up from behind me, put his hand around my mouth, grabbed my vagina, and started dragging me, and I froze, like I couldn’t even scream for help.”
She admitted she had only told her husband this story before, but she said if it happens again, she wants to be strong enough to defend herself.
