‘Crocodile Dundee’ Star Dies In Australia
A star made famous by the 1980s Crocodile Dundee film has recently passed away. Notably, the star was over 90 years old at the time of their passing. Fans were made aware of the news through social media.
The Crocodile Dundee Films Were Credited With Promoting Australian Culture Worldwide
Crocodile Dundee, often stylized as “Crocodile” Dundee, is a 1986 film that featured Paul Hogan as the titular Mick Dundee. Inspired by Australian cattle grazier and hunter Rod Ansell, the film revolves around a quick-witted bushman who becomes a fish-out-of-water in New York.
The film proved to be one of the highest-grossing Australian films worldwide at the time. It was also popular enough to inspire a few sequels and is credited with promoting Australian culture around the world.
While the “Crocodile” in the title refers to Hogan’s character’s nickname, a real-life crocodile also appeared in the film. Tragically, however, it was since been revealed that the reptilian star, Burt, has passed away.
Crocosaurus Cove, the Australian reptile park who housed Burt in his later years, announced his passing on Instagram. As noted by Variety, he was estimated to be over 90 years old at the time of his death.
As a statement read, “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Burt, the iconic Saltwater crocodile and star of the Australian classic Crocodile Dundee. Burt passed away peacefully over the weekend, estimated to be over 90 years old, marking the end of an incredible era.”
Burt Had A Second Career Following His Movie Days
The Cove also shared some of Burt’s history. As the statement continued, “Burt’s life story is one of strength, resilience, and a personality as bold as the Top End itself. Captured in the 1980s in the Reynolds River, Burt became one of the most recognized crocodiles in the world, appearing in Crocodile Dundee and helping to shape Australia’s image as a land of rugged natural beauty and awe-inspiring wildlife.”
The statement also noted that Burt first came to the Cove in 2008. While there, he became known for his “independent nature” and was described as a “confirmed bachelor.” He was also described as being more than “just a crocodile; he was a force of nature and a reminder of the power and majesty of these incredible creatures.”

The Cove’s team thanked Burt’s fans, highlighting the “vital role wildlife plays in our shared history.” The post ended, reading, “We plan to honor Burt’s legacy with a commemorative sign at the attraction, celebrating his extraordinary life and the stories and interactions he shared throughout his time at the park.”
As noted by ABC News, Burt had an ongoing career since his movie-making days. In the years since the film, he was known for making election “predictions” at the Darwin park. Typically, he would be presented two pictures of candidates with meat hanging underneath. Burt would cast his choice with the meat he picked. However, as the publication noted, his guesses weren’t always correct.
