‘Friday Night Lights’ Returning, What You Need To Know
A new reboot of Friday Night Lights is coming to Peacock. The original series, which was a movie reboot, ran for five seasons. It had a two-season run on NBC and then moved to DirecTV’s 101 Network for three more. The show had a low viewership compared to other dramas, but it has gained plenty of fans over the years since its release.
Now, a new version is coming, and here is what you need to know.
Friday Night Lights Reboot Coming To Peacock
A new version of Friday Night Lights is coming to Peacock. The original was a movie based on the non-fiction book by H. G. Bissinger. His book was about the football teams in Midland and Odessa, two West Texas towns reliant on the oil industry. One of the only forms of entertainment there is high school football.
The movie, based loyally on the book, told the story of these real-life high school football powerhouses and how they affected their communities. It was a story about life in a small town in Texas. However, when the show came to television, things changed.
The TV show was no longer about the real towns of Odessa and Midland. Instead, it focused on a fictional Texas town and its football team, the Dillon Panthers. Kyle Chandler (who earned an Emmy for his turn as Coach Eric Taylor) led the cast. It also had some big-name young stars, including Minka Kelly, Adrianne Palicki, Taylor Kitsch, Jesse Plemons, Michael B. Jordan, and more.
However, the new show will have nothing to do with the characters these actors played.
What Is New Friday Night Lights About?
The new Friday Night Lights is not a revival or continuation of the original series. Instead, it is a show about an entirely new set of characters. The connection is that it is still about small-town high school football and its obsessive fans.
The synopsis reads: “Following a devastating hurricane, a rag tag high school football team and their damaged, interim coach make an unlikely bid for a Texas High School State Championship becoming a beacon of light for their town” (via TV Line).
There is no word on who is making the new series or who will star in it. However, it will air on Peacock. According to sources, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video were interested in the show and put in bids for it, but Peacock won out in the end. Jason Katims, Peter Berg, and Brian Grazer will produce the series. Berg directed the movie and helped develop the TV show. Katims was the showrunner for the original TV series.
