Selena Gomez’s Mystery Bacterial Illness Explained
Selena Gomez reportedly has a little-known health battle that she is fighting. According to reports, she has a new health affliction to add to her list of concerns that she has been dealing with over the last decade. Here is what you need to know about Gomez’s health concerns.
Selena Gomez Reveals New Health Concern
Selena Gomez has always been open about her medical struggles. In 2017, she underwent a kidney transplant. She also suffers from lupus and underwent treatment to help her in that ongoing battle. She also has mental health struggles and opened up about her depression and bipolar disorder in the documentary My Mind and Me.
Now, she has revealed a new medical concern called small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. This happened when she responded to body shamers who lashed out at her on social media. Her reaction to the trolls came in a since-deleted TikTok video (via The Express).
Some commenters made fun of her appearance at the American French Film Festival in Los Angeles. Gomez didn’t let them get away with it, though. She posted the video and said, “This makes me sick…I have SIBO in my small intestine. I don’t care that I don’t look like a stick figure. I don’t have that body. End of story. No I am NOT a victim. I’m just human.”
What Is Selena Gomez’s Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO)?
This is a medical condition that is characterized by an excessive number of bacteria in the small intestine. It can cause life-changing issues, including diarrhea, abdominal pain, and loss of appetite. This clearly will also cause Selena Gomez’s weight loss.
“Symptoms of SIBO can vary, but they typically include bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and sometimes malnutrition,” Dr Lawrence Cunningham said (via the Mirror). “In my experience, SIBO often goes undiagnosed because its symptoms can be mistaken for other digestive disorders.”
The good news is that SIBO is not a life-long condition, but it is one that a person has to manage through treatment. This includes stress management and diet adjustments.
While Selena is battling fans who think they have the right to body shame other people, she is also preparing for a huge project. Her media company, Wondermind, acquired the rights to Julianna Baggott’s high-concept short story Baggage Claim.
Baggage Claim follows Bethany, a bored woman working in a unique baggage claim office where memories, stored as scents in vials, can be reclaimed after a costly piece-of-mind procedure. Bethany, addicted to sniffing these bottled memories, finds herself upended when she falls in love with someone’s memories.
