Bethany Hamilton Uses Tragedy To Inspire On ‘The Masked Singer’

Bethany Hamilton was unmasked on The Masked Singer this week. The former surf pro was there to hopefully inspire people, and she seemed happy to represent her family on the show. This was also a tough time for her since she experienced great tragedy recently and had to overcome it as she worked to get ready for her performance.
Here is what Bethany said about performing on The Masked Singer.
Bethany Hamilton Talks Masked Singer Performance
Bethany Hamilton was unmasked this week on The Masked Singer. This happened just about a month after her three-year-old nephew died after drowning. Bethany said she was “grateful” to perform in the reality television competition as she hoped to continue inspiring people with her appearance.

For those unaware, Bethany was a professional surfer. To achieve this, she had to overcome great odds. In 2003, a shark attacked Bethany when she was only 13 and was surfing in Hawaii. She was lying on a surfboard with her arms in the water when the tiger shark raced up and bit her arm off.
Hamilton lost over 60% of her blood and went into hypovolemic shock. Hamilton didn’t let it stop her, and a month later, she started surfing again. She had a board specially made for her to use with only one arm and entered her first competition just over two months after she lost her arm.
Bethany won an ESPY Award in 2004 and took second place at the ASP World Junior Championships in 2008. Now, she has brought her singing talents to The Masked Singer. However, she suffered through a very different tragedy before she was set to perform.
Bethany Hamilton Talks Losing Nephew
Bethany Hamilton, dressed as a Macaron on The Masked Singer, said remains surprised they invited her to sing on the show. “I sing to my children every single day, but I wouldn’t say it’s my gift and life talent,” Bethany said (via PEOPLE). “Maybe I’ll stick to surfing.”

However, she chose to move on to compete even after the death of her nephew. “We all will face hardship at some point or another in our life, and I really just wanted to encourage people to know that they can endure and persevere, and so much good and beauty can come from some of the most awful things in life,” she said.
Bethany announced the death of her nephew Andrew on October 19. Bethany said she felt “such a joy” in singing on The Masked Singer. She said she wants to create “a family network to inspires people to overcome, to keep connected, to live lives of faith.”
