Fans of the Breaking Bad series should be familiar with Jesse Pinkman’s house on the show. However, the real-life house used for filming has a few stories of its own. The house’s owner also recently shared a surprisingly touching story involving how much the crew paid for filming there.

The Real House Was Owned By A School Teacher

Breaking Bad revolves around Bryan Cranston’s Walter White, a struggling high school teacher who becomes a crime lord. He teams up with his ex-student Jesse Pinkman, played by Aaron Paul, to produce and sell a popular blue meth. Eventually, they find themselves at odds with drug cartels, gangs, and the DEA.

Located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Jesse’s home on the show was owned by school teacher Christine Brennan in real life. The building also appeared in The House From…, a documentary film that looks at famous houses from television and film.

In the series, the home originally belonged to Jesse’s aunt. Having moved in while she was dying of lung cancer, his parents took over ownership of the house, allowing him to stay there.

According to Brennan, the house was still her home in spite of what happened to its counterpart on Breaking Bad. As she shared, in an interview with People, “When I would watch the series and I’d see the portions inside the house, I’d say, ‘Yeah that’s Jesse’s house,’ but it was my house. It’s where I raised my kids.”

As Brennan continued, “To me, it was also a place where we celebrated my mom’s 80th birthday. I had so many beautiful experiences — my mom and dad’s 50th wedding anniversary, Thanksgiving dinner, Christmas.”

“My dad’s birthday was always at my house with his oyster stew. He liked his oyster stew and the whole family would get together.”

Owning The Breaking Bad Setting Helped With Finances

Brennan also noted the connection she has with fans of the show. As she mused, “To me it’s kind of a privilege to share the memories of what I had with the house with the fans of Jesse’s house.”

As the homeowner, Brennan was paid in exchange for the cast and crew filming at her house. In a statement, she revealed how helpful this way to her.

“[It was] $500 for the day if they needed to come, $2,000 if they filmed; if they don’t film any more than 14 days then I don’t have to pay income taxes on it. So at that point, my son was in high school and I was able to buy him a car…On a school teacher’s salary, it was hard for me to afford things, but I put that money towards a used car for him.”

Problems also arose during the production of the second season when Brennan tried selling the house. In fact, this even impacted events on the show.

As Brennan shared, “Vince Gilligan wasn’t real happy to me when he found out I was selling the house mid-season. He had already envisioned what the next season was going to be like and he had to shift gears.”

“He had to rewrite the script so that Jesse’s house would be sold, probably, in case the new owners didn’t allow the filming, which resulted in Jesse having to move elsewhere because the buyers of my house were going to be in the process of remodeling it.”

Fans of the series may remember that Jesse is eventually kicked out of the house when his parents discover the lab. Later, Jesse gets his revenge by re-purchasing the house with the help of Saul Goodman.
