HBO Producing New Series Based On ‘Florida Man’ Phenom
The “Florida Man” jokes have been online for a few years. The idea is that a person will type those two words into the search engine, and there will be several bizarre articles from legitimate news sites about someone doing something completely bizarre. Now, HBO Max is making a documentary about it.
Here is what you need to know about the new HBO Max docuseries.
HBO Releasing It’s Florida, Man Docuseries
HBO Max is releasing the comedy series It’s Florida, Man, which is part docuseries and part sketch comedy series. Some docuseries bring in actors to play the parts of people the show tells the story of. However, this one brings in actors you will recognize to tell the stories – all of which they claim are true Florida stories.
“As stories get wilder, more often than not, they’re not true,” author Carl Hiaasen said in the trailer. “But in Florida, they’re all true.” With this docuseries, the characters are all played for laughs but are all allegedly true stories of Florida residents.
The synopsis reads: “This hilarious and outrageous series sheds light on the viral, wacky, and weird. Covering diverse topics – from mermaids to witches, extreme fantasies, and feral bunnies with equal parts humor and heart, ‘It’s Florida, Man’ is a love letter to the beaches, backwaters, and especially the people of a misunderstood yet magical state” (via HBO).
One way to describe the series is that it is Drunk History but about the Florida Man. Here is what some fans said after watching the trailer:

Who Is In It’s Florida, Man?
The people in front of and behind the cameras are all recognizable faces. Mark Herwick and director Jeff Tomsic created and directed the series. Danny McBride (The Righteous Gemstones) is one of the executive producers, which might explain how they got the talent they did for the series.
The cast playing the “real-life” Florida residents include Anna Faris, Jake Johnson, Randall Park, Juliette Lewis, Sam Richardson, Ego Nwodim, and more.
This also shouldn’t be confused with the Netflix series, Florida Man, which premiered in 2023. That series is a crime drama starring Édgar Ramírez and Abbey Lee and is a scripted series about an ex-cop searching for a runaway girlfriend.
It’s Florida, Man premieres on HBO Max on Friday, October 18, at 11 p.m. EST. It will air on both HBO and the Max streaming service.
