How ‘Bering Sea Gold’ Blends ‘Deadliest Catch’ & ‘Gold Rush’
Bering Sea Gold is one of Discovery Channel’s most popular reality TV shows. What makes this so impressive is that it should never have worked. The series combined ideas from two other Discovery shows into one show, which resulted in a surprise success.
Here is how Bering Sea Gold combined Gold Rush and Deadliest Catch into a mishmash of success.
Bering Sea Gold Is A Mix Of Two Other Successful Discovery Shows
Deadliest Catch is a Discovery reality TV series that sees crab fisherman wishing their lives to catch crabs during crab season, hoping to come back with enough to pay the crew and come out with a profit to allow the fishermen to continue to the next season.
Gold Rush is a Discovery reality TV series about gold miners who set out and spend massive amounts of money hoping to strike gold in Alaska. While the danger of Deadliest Catch is not there, finding enough gold to keep the team returning season after season is still risky.
This leads to the plot of this Discovery reality TV series. It is about boats attempting to mine gold from the sea and all the dangers that it entails. This means the show takes the idea of Gold Rush and adds the danger of Deadliest Catch, combining the two shows into one.
It should come as no surprise that Thom Beers came up with the concept for both Deadliest Catch and Bering Sea Gold (via NY Times).
What Is Bering Sea Gold About?
Just like Gold Rush, Bering Sea Gold is about heading out with mining equipment with the dream of finding the gold out there to help make the business and venture a success. Just like Deadliest Catch, it is about doing a job in the unforgiving sea and returning to shore alive.
Bering Sea Gold splits its focus between the summer and spring dredging seasons. This allows the seasons to air twice a year, each with its own unique challenges. When the teams hit it big, it is always a giant deal. Filming at Alaska’s Bering Strait, the show has also attracted a huge audience.
The show has aired for 18 seasons now after debuting in 2012. Gold Rush has only aired for 14 seasons (not including spinoffs), but it debuted in 2010. Deadliest Catch is on its 20th season after premiering in 2005.
Unlike the other shows, though, there is also controversy with this one as Nome residents are not happy with the mining operations impact on fishing routes and its ecological impact.
