Sarah Michelle Gellar Teases Crossover On ‘Dexter’ Prequel
Sarah Michelle Gellar and Patrick Dempsey shared a selfie together while in-character for their upcoming roles for Dexter: Original Sin. Gellar took the opportunity to joke about a possible crossover between their two most famous characters. This is keeping with the prequel series serving as a love-letter to the 1990s.
Gellar & Dempsey Even Wore Their Costumes For The Selfie
Dexter: Original Sin serves as a prequel to the Dexter series, which ran for eight seasons, and will focus on the start of Dexter Morgan’s transformation into a vigilante serial killer.
Dempsey will play Miami Metro Homicide Captain Aaron Spencer on the series, with Gellar playing Tanya Martin. Noting that the trailer referred to Gellar’s part as a “special guest role,” People described the character as Dexter’s new boss and the Miami Metro Police Department’s CSI chief.
The two actors shared a selfie of themselves together, teasing their appearance on the show, on Gellar’s Instagram account. Before this, Gellar also shared the series’ trailer on her account.
Gellar and Dempsey were both wearing their costumes for the selfie. Gellar had also captioned the post, “The crossover you didn’t know you needed (#McBuff?!?).”
The Series Cast Actors Fans Associate With The 1990s
The term “McBuff” alludes the two actors’ most famous roles. Gellar’s breakout role was that of Buffy Summers, the titular heroine of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The series, which saw Buffy fight the forces of evil in the fictional Sunnydale, California, lasted from 1997 to 2003. Likewise, it acknowledges Dempsey’s role as Dr. Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd on the first 11 seasons of Grey’s Anatomy.

Thanks to the selfie, fans can pretend the famous slayer has met “McDreamy,” but there’s also another connection between Gellar and Dempsey. Fans also noted that the two actors have been part of the Scream franchise. Gellar appeared in Scream 2 in 1997 as Cici Cooper. Dempsey later appeared in Scream 3 in 2000, playing Detective Mark Kincaid.
People previously reported that, with the series taking place in the 1990s, there was a conscious decision to cast actors associated with the decade. This also included Christian Slater, who plays Dexter Morgan’s father, Harry.
Showtime’s president of content and chief content officer, Nina L. Diaz, reflected on this, saying, “Sarah Michelle Gellar is a pop culture icon who perfectly rounds out our best-in-class cast featuring Christian Slater and Patrick Dempsey among others.”
Dexter: Original Sin is expected to premiere on Paramount+ with Showtime on December 13. The series is expected for broadcast on Showtime two days later. Fans of the Dexter series can also expect a sequel series, Dexter: New Blood, which is believed to be in development.
