Joseph Petito, the father of Gabby Petito, shared a heartbreaking post on the third anniversary of his daughter’s death. Gabby was murdered by her fiance Brian Laundrie while they were on a cross-country trip in 2021. Three years later, her family is still struggling with the reality that Gabby is gone. Here is what Joseph shared in honor of his late daughter.

Joseph Petito ‘Can’t Stop Crying’

“Three years ago this evening you were taken from us,” he wrote on Instagram. “We can’t stop crying when we think of you. There is no waking up from this nightmare.”

“We push forward for you and all those you have inspired and nothing can make us stop,” Joseph continued.

He ended his post by making a plea to his followers to share a missing persons’ post or flyer, followed by the hashtag #EveryoneDeservesTheSameAttention.

Along with his devastating post, he shared a photo of himself with Gabby Petito. In the photo, they are sitting next to each other with their feet in fish tanks. The father-daughter duo was laughing while they received their “fish spa therapy.”

Hundreds of people offered their condolences to Joseph Petito in the comments. “Thinking of you and your family! I remember following this so closely though I’m from another country!! Devastating and heartbroken! She won’t ever be forgotten!” one person wrote.

“That makes my heart hurt for you and your family !!! I’m so sorry,” another Instagram user chimed in. A third commented, “Was and still am so heartbroken for your family. Praying for peace today. I pray at least one victim is found in her name.”

The Gabby Petito Case

Although Joseph’s post marks the third anniversary of her death, it is still unknown exactly when Gabby Petito died. She was first reported missing on September 11, 2021.

At the time, her fiance Brian Laundrie returned home from their cross-country road trip without Gabby. Six days later, Brian vanished after being named a person of interest in her disappearance.

On September 21, Gabby Petito’s remains were found near Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming. Shortly after being discovered, her death was ruled a homicide. Autopsy reports revealed that she was strangled to death. She also suffered blunt force trauma to her neck and head.

An arrest warrant was issued for Brian Laundrie, but justice would never be served. His remains were found several weeks later at Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park in Florida. It was reported that he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Police uncovered a handwritten note from Brian confessing to the murder of Gabby Petito.

Gabby’s parents decided to seek justice elsewhere. They sued the Moab Police Department in Utah for $50 million in November 2022.

The MPD responded to reports of Brian slapping Gabby as the pair were on their road trip. Body cam footage showed the young woman telling officers that she and Brian were fighting all morning that day.

Crying, she described some of Brian’s aggression toward her, which left her with a cut on her cheek. However, officers determined that Gabby Petito was the “primary aggressor” of the fight.

Her parents Joseph Petito and Nichole Schmidt blame the police force’s lack of training and “negligent hiring” for their daughter’s death. Last month, the Moab Police Department filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit, calling it a cash grab.

“Honestly, Moab’s response and attitude is infuriating,” Gabby’s dad told The U.S. Sun. “The official investigative report concludes the officers made serious mistakes. The Moab officers themselves googled the law, acknowledged they had no discretion, and that failing to follow the statute could cause victims to get killed. It’s all on video.”

He continued, describing “Their inability to take responsibility” as “inexcusable.” It only makes Gabby Petito’s parents want to pursue the case further.
