An attorney has revealed that charges will be filed sometime soon in relation to the death of Matthew Perry. Anyone who is found responsible for supplying the drugs that ultimately killed the actor will be held accountable. So, what are the charges, and who is going to be facing time? Here is what has been revealed so far.

Entertainment Attorney Says Charges Are On The Horizon

Matthew Perry was found unresponsive at his home in Los Angeles on October 28, 2023. He was in his hot tub and, at first, his cause of death was not clear. His autopsy revealed that he suffered from the acute effects of ketamine and drowning.

The actor was upfront about his struggles with addiction over the years. He also spoke about the ketamine infusion therapy that he was using to treat depression before his death.

After the drug was found in his system, officials began to investigate the Friends star’s death more closely. Although Matthew was undergoing ketamine therapy at the time, his last session was a week prior to his death. Ketamine only stays in your system for several hours, so it was clear he got the drug from somewhere else.

Last December, the LAPD launched a criminal investigation into Matthew Perry’s death. Their goal was to pinpoint how the star got the drugs that killed him. Since then, the LAPD has worked with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service to attempt to uncover the line of supply.

Tre Lovell, an entertainment attorney, told The U.S. Sun that he thinks arrests in the case are on the horizon. It will also likely involve more than one person. He said that even though the star’s death was ultimately ruled as accidental, the charges would be unforgiving.

“Charges will be coming any day now,” said Lovell. “This investigation has been going on for a long time, and the leaks are starting to come out, which are probably intentional [Anonymous law enforcement sources] are not going to leak stuff unless they intend on indicting, otherwise they’ll get egg on their face.”

What Will People Be Charged With?

Whispers of the investigation coming to a close have been circulating since June and it was made clear that multiple charges could be filed. However, the U.S. Attorney’s Office has been tight-lipped about whether or not that will happen.

That said, Lovell said the charges could fall on a number of different people. It could include Matthew Perry’s doctors who may have given the actor an under-the-table prescription. The charges could also be against drug dealers and friends who helped him get the drugs.

What would the actual charges entail though? Lovell said it could be a number of things. Charges could range from distribution of a controlled substance to criminal negligence to involuntary manslaughter and even mail fraud.

“There cases are tough […] when somebody overdoses, that’s an act of their own volition, so to impose criminal culpability there’s a very high standard,” the attorney said. “They have to get warrants, they have to get subpoenas, they have to get private information from his physician, and this takes a lot of time.”

That said, any of the accused parties could face anywhere from 4 to 20 years in prison. The “star power” behind Matthew Perry is the motivation for officials to prosecute the case to the fullest extent of the law.

Right now, there are a lot of policies enacted to bring down drug distribution. The drug epidemic in the United States has led law officials to crack down on fentanyl and other controlled substances, like ketamine. When there is an overdose, the government is looking to identify the dealers and others who can be charged.

“They want to deter future acts, and the best way to prevent someone from distributing drugs is deterring them from getting involved in the first place,” Lovell told The U.S. Sun. When it is someone as high profile as Matthew Perry, it is an opportunity to display the serious consequences of supplying others with drugs. “And they’ll want to make that clear in this investigation,” he concluded.

Who Will Be Charged In The Death Of Matthew Perry?

The only person who has been publicly identified in relation to the investigation into the star’s death is Brooke Mueller. She met Matthew Perry in rehab and they remained friends. Her phone and laptop were taken into custody after the police raided her sober living home in May.

Reports state that Brooke has been cooperating with law enforcement officials on the investigation. “She’s being tight-lipped about the situation. But the investigators must have known something to get a warrant and turn up like that,” Lovell revealed.

Right now, there aren’t any details about what her role in the actor’s death might have been. However, she has remained adamant that she doesn’t have anything to do with it.

Another unnamed star has also been investigated in relation to Matthew Perry’s death. Both the star and Matthew were said to be sober, but a source said that they were known to be “walking pharmacies.”

In the end, Lovell thinks that law enforcement will attempt to charge as many people as they can. Deals may be offered to the “lesser offenders” to give up information about other players in the drug circle. That said, they don’t want to charge anyone prematurely, so the LAPD and other officials are taking their time to build this case.

“It’s going to be very interesting to find out who is involved in all this,” Lovell concluded.
