Following a rather disappointing season of Married At First Sight, producers are trying to figure out what the best way forward for the franchise might be. Right now, Season 18 will feature five new couples in the city of Chicago. However, is there a possibility that MAFS may introduce backup couples? Here is what has been revealed and why backup couples might be a great decision for the future of the show.

Season 17 Nearly Sunk The Franchise

If you’re familiar with the show, you know that each couple is expertly matched by a panel of therapists. The experts pair the couples together and offer guidance through the first eight weeks of their marriage.

Dr. Pepper Schwartz has been an expert on the MAFS panel since the beginning. Pastor Cal Roberson joined the panel in Season 4, and Dr. Pia Holec became an expert on Married At First Sight in Season 15.

While the Lifetime show has been fairly popular, many fans have started to complain about the number of unsuccessful matches. Viewers have also been disappointed in the “experts” ability to assist the couples in working through their problems.

Overall, there have been 64 couples featured on MAFS since its inception. Only 12 of them are still together, putting the success rate at about 18.75%. Even though successful couples are a good example of how the show’s approach can work, the number of couples who haven’t worked out overshadows that greatly.

Season 17 of Married At First Sight was one of the most hectic seasons yet. None of the couples wound up together and two called it quits before Decision Day. Typically, when that happens, the show just focuses on the remaining couples. Because two couples called off their marriage within a month, much of the content that was filmed wound up featuring the broken-up pairs.

Will There Be Backup Couples On Married At First Sight?

That is where the potential backup couples could come in handy for producers. Usually, there are five or fewer couples per season. As we saw in Season 17, this leaves a lot of opportunity for failure. Adding more couples into the mix could provide more drama for the show, but viewers could also see more heartfelt moments between the couples if they’re paired well.

Overall, more couples would mean more work for the experts, but it could also be an opportunity for them to show off their “expert” matching skills.

At the end of the day, the current number of couples featured on Married At First Sight isn’t working for the show. Adding more couples, or even having backup couples, would help viewers get the juicy drama they’re searching for. It would also increase the likelihood that some of the couples might actually wind up together.
