Is Ellen Pompeo Resuming Her Starring Role On ‘Grey’s Anatomy’?
Is it possible that Ellen Pompeo is returning to Grey’s Anatomy? She originated the role of Dr. Meredith Grey in 2005 before departing the show in Season 19. However, Ellen couldn’t stay away for long. She also returned in a handful of Season 20 episodes.
Although the character moved away to Boston, Meredith was always on fans’ minds. Ellen Pompeo and Shonda Rhimes built the exciting world of Grey’s together. The episodes without her hardly felt like the medical drama that fans fell in love with.
Now, plenty of fans believe the Grey’s veteran will be back in even more episodes in the upcoming fall season. Is it a matter of time before she permanently resumes her role?
Will Ellen Pompeo Ever Make A Permanent Comeback To Grey’s?
Ellen Pompeo has played Meredith Grey for 19 years now. Naturally, it makes sense she would want to explore other projects. But Grey’s Anatomy will always be close to her heart. And the cast and crew love her as well.
In a spring interview with Deadline, Grey’s showrunner Meg Marinis said that Ellen Pompeo is always welcome back on the show.
“She’s always a huge part of the show; we have an open door policy with her. When she is able to be here, we welcome her with open arms,” Marinis said. “She’s constantly in my head, her voice.”
According to Deadline, fans can expect to see Ellen Pompeo in at least seven episodes of Season 21. The upcoming fall season will reportedly have 18 episodes. The publication also notes that production is attempting to cut costs by reducing the number of episodes next season. But if the episode count increases for some reason, Ellen’s appearances could increase too.
However, Deadline also notes that reps from both ABC and Grey’s Anatomy producers declined to comment. If there are plans to bring Ellen Pompeo back full-time, they’re keeping that under wraps for now.

What’s In Store For Grey’s Anatomy Season 21?
As fans saw at the end of Season 20, Meredith Grey and her colleagues are in some pretty hot water right now. She’s currently at odds with Debbie Allen’s character, Dr. Catherine Fox. Catherine ordered Meredith to turn over her highly-valued Alzheimer’s research, but she refused and published an abstract online instead.
Although things in the professional world are up in the air for Meredith, her love life seems to be in much better shape. But it is Grey’s Anatomy after all and anything could happen.
