Does Netflix Owe Apology To The Real Martha Of ‘Baby Reindeer’?

Baby Reindeer became a smashing success on Netflix after its 2024 spring release date. But not everyone was happy about the show’s success.

Shortly after Baby Reindeer premiered, a Scottish woman named Fiona Harvey came forward, claiming to be the inspiration for the “Martha” character. In the show, Martha stalked, harassed, and even groped the main character without his consent. Now, Harvey is claiming Netflix completely destroyed her reputation and is suing the streaming giant for millions.

Although Fiona Harvey has her fair share of critics, she also has supporters too. Many believe Netflix treated her entirely unfairly and want justice for her.

One Baby Reindeer Critic Wants Fiona Harvey To Have An Apology

According to The Sun, at least one critic firmly believes Netflix owes Fiona Harvey an apology.

“On Baby Reindeer the short answer is I have no idea how Netflix can justify saying this is a true story and then at the end of the end credits say something like, some scenes were fictionalized and the characters conflated,” Duane Dedman said at a speaking engagement. “That’s obviously seen as contradictory and we shall see if the court case in America ever goes to trial or whether they settle out of court.”

Next, someone asked if Netflix needed to answer to Fiona Harvey. Dedman replied, “Personally, arguably, yes [Netflix does owe Fiona Harvey an apology] but I guess this will play out in the courts.”

Dedman went on to say that Netflix is “deliberately” keeping the situation under wraps. He speculated that it’s entirely possible they have enough evidence to refute Harvey’s claims, but haven’t come forward yet.

“Now, all I know about Netflix is there is a team of lawyers there, there is a compliance team there, so someone, more than once will have cast their eyes over the script and the final program,” Dedman continued. “I literally can’t second guess as to why they came to that decision, so I don’t want to go there, but I guess this will play out.”

Fiona Harvey Appeared On Piers Morgan To Proclaim Her Innocence

Not long after Baby Reindeer came to Netflix, Fiona Harvey agreed to speak with Piers Morgan about her portrayal. In the interview, she adamantly claimed she never watched the series. However, she seemed to know quite a lot about its contents. More than anything, Harvey seemed to resent the way actress Jessica Gunning portrayed her.

Time will tell what happens with this ongoing legal issue.

What do you make of the situation? Should Netflix apologize to Fiona Harvey over her fictionalized portrayal in Baby Reindeer? Or is Fiona Harvey in the wrong here? Share your own thoughts and ideas in the comments.
