Mark Harmon has been away from NCIS for a while now. Since he left, he has remained mostly out of the spotlight. He remains an executive producer on the entire franchise but mostly hasn’t considered returning as Jethro Leroy Gibbs. However, he has now finally announced his return as an actor.

Here is when fans can expect to see Mark Harmon again and what is next for the NCIS legend.

Mark Harmon Returning To Acting

Mark Harmon is returning to his role as a working actor. Besides working as a producer, he has mostly remained out of the business since leaving NCIS. He starred as Leroy Jethro Gibbs for the first 19 seasons of the hit police procedural series.

Now, three years after leaving NCIS, Mark Harmon is returning for a new movie. He will star in the sequel to Freaky Friday titled Freaky Friday 2. The movie will arrive in 2025. This is a return to an old role for Harmon. He played Ryan, the fiance of Jamie Lee Curtis’ Tess Coleman, in the 2003 original. Now, over 20 years later, he returns to the role.

This might be the start of a big return for Harmon. He just signed with a new talent agency in 2023. The Gersh Agency also represents Brendan Fraser, Allison Janney, Patricia Arquette, Adam Driver, and Mandy Moore.

Mark Harmon will also executive produce NCIS: Origins. This series will replace the canceled NCIS: Hawai’i and will follow a young Leroy Jethro Gibbs as he starts his tenure with NCIS. Harmon won’t appear on screen, but he will narrate the series (similar to Jim Parsons and Young Sheldon).

Harmon also recently wrote a book titled Ghosts of Honolulu: A Japanese Spy, A Japanese American Spy Hunter, and the Untold Story of Pearl Harbor, along with NCIS technical advisor Leon Carroll Jr.

What Is NCIS: Origins About?

NCIS: Origins will follow Leroy Jethro Gibbs as he gets his start in NCIS at the Pendleton branch. Mark Harmon will narrate the series about his character’s origins. He will produce the series with his son, Sean Harmon.

Other cast members include Patrick Fischler, Diany Rodriguez, Tyla Abercrombie, Mariel Molino, and Julian Black Antelope. NCIS veteran producers Gina Lucita Monreal and David J. North are the showrunners.
