Over the years, Costner has proven himself to be the top choice when you’re filming a Western or anything Western-adjacent.

Costner Exit Left Huge Boots To Fill
Certainly, while there are other Yellowstone gems, like Cole Hauser’s memorable turn as Rip Wheeler, many fans agree that the Yellowstone engine doesn’t quite run without Kevin Costner as John Dutton leading the pack. There have been all sorts of rumors and speculation as to why Costner left the role, with plenty of viewers demanding he make a return.
In addition, everything from contract disputes over money, a beef with show creator Taylor Sheridan, and Costner wanting to work on other projects has been discussed as to why he left. With the recent announcement that the second part of Yellowstone Season 5 will be arriving in November 2024, there is renewed interest in Costner’s exit.
Yellowstone: Gayle King Grills Kevin Costner Over Controversial Departure
Recently, Kevin Costner sat down with Gayle King for an interview. Gayle cut right to the chase, poking and prodding the actor for all the tea on why he left a project that was a passion project for him.
King asked the actor about his current relationship with Taylor Sheridan, and why the pair were not able to work things out, to the point where he could have returned for Yellowstone Season 5B.
To which Costner said: “I loved the show before anybody. It was Taylor and myself. The truth never changes — that love was really strong. The idea of going back, I would do that in a second if I felt that it was … if it was something that I could do, wanted to do, I would make it fit.”
In addition, King pressed the actor for more, asking: “If it’s not that hard, why can’t the two of you be able to work it out?”
Costner quickly shut this line of questioning down, coming back with: “This isn’t therapy, Gayle. I mean, we’re not gonna discuss this on the show.”
According to Forbes, Yellowstone Season 5B will premiere on November 10, 2024, on Paramount.
