Shannen Doherty Talks About Dating With An ‘Expiration Date’
Shannen Doherty opened up about the possibility of dating while she continues to battle stage 4 cancer. In a conversation with Kelly Ripa, the former Beverly Hills 90210 star shared that she is hesitant to pursue a relationship with anyone. Continue reading to see what else she had to say about dating at this time in her life.
Shannen Doherty Thinks She’s ‘A Very Hard Sell’
On Wednesday’s episode of the podcast “Let’s Talk Off Camera” hosted by Kelly Ripa, Shannen Doherty said that she thinks it is hard for men to like someone like her. “Because it’s hard to go into dating someone when you know that they might have an expiration date,” she said.
The 53-year-old further explained, saying that “most men” struggle to deal with “death and illness.” That being said, she thinks she’s “a very hard sell” when it comes to dating.
“It’s more companionship than anything else,” Shannen told Kelly. “Anyway, I’m a little self-conscious, because I have so many scars from surgery that it’s like, how do you explain that ‘No, that isn’t from giving birth, that’s from reconstruction surgery.’”
She also spoke about how she has had a complicated past with her confidence. The surgeries she’s had to have as a result of her cancer diagnosis have made her even more insecure.
Shannen Has An Ongoing Battle With Ex-Husband
In addition to that, Shannen filed for divorce from her ex-husband Kurt Iswarienko in April 2023. The couple had been married for 11 years, but she claimed that she found out he was having an affair right before she went in for surgery to remove a brain tumor. She also accused him of delaying the divorce proceedings so that he wouldn’t have to pay spousal support, stating that he was waiting for her to die. Her estranged husband has denied the allegations.
Shannen Doherty was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015. The Beverly Hills 90210 star went into remission in 2017, but the cancer came back in 2020. Then, last year, she shared that it had spread to her brain and bones. After she found out that the disease was continuing to spread, she has been more open about her health struggles.
The actress has also been doing what she can to make her inevitable death easier on her mother, Rosa. She has been moving things into storage and downsizing.
“My priority at the moment is my mom. I know it’s going to be hard on her if I pass away before her. Because it’s going to be so hard on her, I want other things to be a lot easier. I don’t want her to have a bunch of stuff to deal with. I don’t want her to have four storage units filled with furniture,” Shannen said in April.
