Jared Padalecki And Genevieve Cortese Padalecki
During the June 25 episode of I’ve Never Said This Before podcast, Jared Padalecki and his wife, Genevieve Cortese tell Tommy DiDario about life as actors in a marriage. While the couple were co-stars in both Supernatural and Walker, they are also parents to three kids, Thomas Colton, 10, Austin “Shep” Shepherd, 8, and Odette Elliott, 5. Although both Jared and Gen are sad to see Walker coming to an end, they are grateful for the time they were working together with the brilliant crew of the show. Likewise, they are happy with the way the finale is closing this era of their lives.
Jared expresses that since it was less than a month ago that he found out about the cancellation of the show, it is still fresh on his mind. Previously, he went from his iconic role of Gilmore Girls‘ Dean Forester, straight into his role as Sam Winchester on Supernatural. Likewise, after leaving Supernatural he already was lined up to portray Cordell Walker. While Jared isn’t moving into a new role right away, he was open about some of his mental health struggles and the break he needed from the industry.
Jared Padalecki Reveals Who Saved Him When He Was Suicidal
Jared Padalecki reveals he was in a rough place. Admittedly, he says, “It was 2015, I had a really low moment.” Furthermore, Jared expresses, “I was letting my thoughts take over and going to places of dramatic suicidal ideation.” During the discussion, he reveals his wife saved his life by getting him the right assistance. He recalls, “I called my wife and she said, ‘Get home.’” Gratefully, he says, “And so, I got home, went to a clinic for a couple of weeks and looked into it and haven’t been suicidal since — not for a moment.” Both Jared and Genevieve Cortese Padalecki met on the set of Supernatural Season 4 and have been close ever since. Thankfully, she was able to help him find his way.
He Needed A Break
However, Jared Padalecki, 41, knows he was at his rock bottom and shares his experience. Furthermore, he hopes it will alleviate the shame others might have over similar issues. Admittedly, he says, “I needed a full reset.” Undeniably, he recognized he needed to take a break. However, he acknowledges that time in the industry took its toll. He says, “I had spent 15 years in this industry. You go to an audition or on a red carpet and they don’t want, ‘Jared, how are you doing today?’ ‘Oh today was rough, I didn’t sleep.’ They want, ‘Oh it’s great! Excited to be here!’ So I had done that for so long, trying to focus on what’s best for the person who’s talking to me as opposed to just being honest.” In many ways, he lost himself along the way and had to reprogram his thinking.
Gen and Jared talk about going to therapy and also giving their kids that opportunity as well. “I don’t wear it as a scarlet letter,” Jared says about needing help. “It’s not like I’m shameful like, ‘Hey, I see a therapist, I’ve been to a clinic’. I wear it proudly. I put it on my face and tell everybody. If you’re not in a situation where you need that degree of help then don’t seek it. I needed a surgeon — not literally — but I needed it and here I am.”
Jared Padalecki Experiences Highs And Lows
Jared Padalecki confesses, “You’re a human, I’m a human. There are still highs and lows. And today’s a low.” He tears up slightly, but says, “I’m fine, nothing to worry about but I have a lot of sadness about Walker [being canceled], the family.” Knowing he is jobless for the first time in twenty-four years comes with uncertainty. “And my tears aren’t for myself. I know I’ll be fine because I’m talking to you about it, I talk to Gen about it, I talk to my friends about it,” he continued. He recognizes that is a huge step from his past ways. “Please be open, please share, please find somebody whether it’s a friend or professional. Speak the truth.”
What Is Next?
While this is a sad moment, grieving the end of a show they thought would continue, he isn’t done. Undeniably, he was very invested as an actor and producer. Jared Padalecki says he is “keeping an open mind and looking to tomorrow, next week, next month, next year.” Jared expresses that this snapshot of life would show it is a rough time, but it is just for this moment. He adds, “Today’s a hard day. It’s been a hard month since we found out, but I’m in a great place with my wife, our children, my friends, my family.” Furthermore, he encourages listeners to, “Seek help, open up.”
