‘Dexter’ Prequel Adds Patrick Dempsey In Major Role
A new Dexter TV series is returning to television, but it will look very different. Michael C. Hall won’t be back as the titular character. He died in the last series at his son’s hands. However, this also won’t follow his son’s journey. The new show will be a prequel series called Dexter: Original Sin. This means a new cast with a younger antihero.
The cast is filling out right now, including the newly signed Patrick Dempsey. Here is what you need to know.
Who Is Patrick Dempsey In Dexter: Original Sin?
The Dexter prequel series cast Patrick Gibson (Shadow and Bone, The OA) to play a young Dexter Morgan, replacing Hall in the role. Christian Slater (Mr. Robot) will play his father, Harry Morgan, while Molly Brown (Billions) plays a young Debra Morgan. James Remar played Harry in the original Dexter (in flashback scenes), while Jennifer Carpenter played Debra.
As for Patrick Dempsey, who is best known as McDreamy, Dr. Derek Shepherd, he will play Aaron Spencer, the Captain of the Miami Metro Homicide. He has had a decades-long relationship with Dexter’s dad, Harry.
“We are thrilled to have him join our all-star cast of Dexter: Original Sin, the highly anticipated origin story of the franchise,” said Paramount Global Co-CEO and President/CEO, Showtime & MTV Entertainment Studios Chris McCarthy (via TVLine).
Other members of the cast include James Martinez (Love, Victor) as Angel Batista, Alex Shimizu (The Blacklist) as Vince Masuka, Christina Milian (Grandfathered) as Maria LaGuerta, and Reno Wilson (Good Girls) as Bobby Watt.
What Is Dexter: Original Sin About?
As mentioned, the Dexter prequel series plays out as an origin story of Dexter Morgan, as his dad Harry teaches him to control his “Dark Passenger” and focus his murderous tendencies on those who deserve it.
According to the synopsis, the prequel series takes place in Miami in 1991, 15 years before the original series began. The series will see Dexter transform from a student into the “avenging serial killer.” The series will also show how Harry helps his son focus his bloodthirsty urges by creating a Code to help him find and kill those who “deserve to be eliminated from society without getting on law enforcements’ radar.”
Dexter also begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department, which is likely where he comes into contact with Dempsey’s Captain Aaron Spencer.
The new series will air on Paramount+, produced by Showtime, the network that aired the original show. Paramount+ has not announced the release date for the new prequel series, but sometime in 2025 is a good bet.
