Hulu’s ‘Brats’ Documentary Is About 80s Brat Pack: Who Are They?
Hulu’s recent Bon Jovi Documentary has reignited an interest in the music of the 80s and 90s. Now, Brats, Andrew McCarthy’s new Brat Pack documentary promises to delve into the movies of the 80s and a group of actors known as The Brat Pack.
Who Coined The Phrase ‘The Brat Pack’?
Before the phrase “The Brat Pack,” actors such as Demi Moore, Andrew McCarthy, Rob Lowe, and Emilio Estevez were actors. However, after that monicker, their lives changed. This happened in 1985 when New York Magazine writer David Blum decided to make a play on the “Rat Pack.” This trio consisted of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Jr., a group considered the pinnacle of the Golden Age of Hollywood.
Although this was a clever label, it wound up haunting many actors in this group. That is because their livelihood as actors was negatively affected by this label. Some stars like Demi Moore went on to build huge careers. While others, like Timothy Hutton, stayed in the background.
Who Was In The Brat Pack?
The Brat Pack was mainly considered the stars of St. Elmo’s Fire and The Breakfast Club, two hit movies of this era. That includes Andrew McCarthy, Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, Demi Moore, Ally Sherry, Molly Ringwald, Anthony Michael Hall, and Rob Lowe.
However, not everyone agreed with who was in this exclusive group. Some even considered the 1986 movie Pretty In Pink in this category. This starred Molly Ringwald, Andrew McCarthy, and Two and A Half Men alum Jon Cryer. However, according to USA Today, Cryer insists he was “definitely not in the Brat Pack.”
Although Lea Thompson, whose latest project is Hallmark’s upcoming series The Chicken Sisters, did not consider herself in this elusive group. While she did marry Pretty In Pink director Howard Deutch and starred in Some Kind Of Wonderful, as well as the Back To the Future movies, she considers herself “Brat Pack-adjacent.”
Although Sean Penn and Tom Cruise were part of the infamous article, both actors managed to avoid that label. Penn was even considered “the most gifted of them all.”
Not Everyone Spoke To Andrew McCarthy
For Andrew McCarthy, this journey back 40 years reunited him with many of his previous co-stars and friends, not everyone participated in this Hulu documentary. Both Judd Nelson and Molly Ringwald did not choose to participate. However, those who did bring a lot of insight into this era. Many have even come to realize how their participation has changed Hollywood.
Most of all, there is a whole generation of fans who will want to revisit this magical era of movies and music.
When Will Hulu Drop Brats?
Brats will be available to stream on Hulu starting on Thursday, June 13.
