‘American Idol’ Runner Up Outselling Champion
There is a thought process that the people who lose on American Idol often have better careers than the champions. While the long-term success remains to be seen, runner-up WIll Moseley is actually more successful right now than champion Abi Carter.
Here is what you need to know about the two competitors as they start their musical careers.
Will Moseley Is Out-Selling American Idol Champion Abi Carter
Abi Carter won American Idol this season, beating out runner-up Will Moseley. She won largely thanks to her incredible renditions of songs like Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?” However, now that she is the Idol champion, she seems to have fallen behind the person she beat, country singer Will Moseley.
Carter’s first single to hit the Billboard charts is her original song, “This Isn’t Over.” The single was pretty successful, reaching No. 23 on the Digital Song Sales chart and selling 2,436 copies (via Forbes). This doesn’t track streaming numbers, but it was an excellent start for Carter as she prepares to launch her musical career.
However, it wasn’t as good as what Will Mosely accomplished with his original single. Will’s single was “Good Book Bad,” and he debuted at No. 14 on the Digital Song Sales chart with 3,457 copies sold. That is over 1,000 more singles sold than Carter and nine spots higher on the charts.
This is also not a surprise. “This Isn’t Over” was Carter’s first song to hit the Billboard charts. However, Mosely has been there before. When Mosely auditioned on American Idol, his song “Gone for Good” debuted at No. 13 on the charts. Three songs debuted that week, and Mosely actually charted one spot higher than Keith Urban’s “Messed Up As Me.”
What Is Next For Mosely & Carter After American Idol?
Abi Carter will get to make her debut album with the help of American Idol. However, Will Mosely has even bigger plans for the next stage of his career. He gets to open for the Zac Brown Band.
“Coming out of college, I thought about getting a job, but I knew I’d regret it if I didn’t give myself a year,” Will said (via Parade). “I think for me that year mark rolling around at the season finale and me still being in it; that’s the special part.”
While Will is heading out with the Zac Brown Band and plans on big things ahead, Abi Carter said she wants to go home and relax before she starts recording music, which she is really excited about. “I want to start releasing songs ASAP. I’ve been writing for so long now, and I can’t wait to put something out in the world that I so fully believe in” (via PEOPLE).
