‘Jeopardy!’ Lands ‘Pop Culture’ Streaming Spinoff
Jeopardy! has landed its first streaming spinoff and it is solely about pop culture. Yes, there have been different variations of the hit game show. Yet, it has never been on a streaming service before. So, where can viewers find it and when is it expected to start airing? Keep reading for more details.
Jeopardy! Lands ‘Pop Culture’ Streaming Spinoff
Not everyone is good at the categories offered on Jeopardy! because they can be tough. Some viewers excel at books, history, and classical music but science and old-world monuments are not their forte. Then, there are fans who just enjoy the pop culture categories which is fine. Viewers are immersed and surrounded by pop culture on a daily basis so it would make sense that they may excel at these categories. Fortunately for them, there will be a new variation of the hit game show solely focused on this genre.
There have been spinoffs where celebrities play the show for charity and college episodes but the categories are in the same vein. Now, according to TV Line, Pop Culture Jeopardy! will be coming to Prime Video. To get a better understanding of what the show is about, the press release says the series:
“combines the academic rigor of Jeopardy! with the excitement and unpredictability of pop culture.”
Additionally, there will be teams of three, making this more of a tournament-style event. The categories will vary “from Alternative Rock to The Avengers; Broadway to MMA; Gen Z to Zendaya.” So, it spans all things pop culture but teams must have broad knowledge of all things entertainment. Michael Davies will stay on as the EP but a host is still up in the air. Finding a host for the classic show was very hard as Alex Trebek was irreplaceable.
In the end, former master player, Ken Jennings and actress, Mayim Bialik were named co-hosts. Then, the writer strike started followed by the SAG-AFTRA strike leading to Mayim’s exit. She took time away in 2023 but it made Jeopardy! realize that they only needed Ken so now he is responsible for all hosting duties regarding the series.
When Will It Begin?
As of now, there is no word on when Pop Culture Jeopardy! will officially begin or if it will have a special run like the other spinoffs. Yet, there is a lot of excitement surrounding it, Suzette Prene, Sony Pictures Television president of game shows shared:
“We couldn’t be more thrilled to collaborate with our partners at Amazon to make Prime Video the home for our new Jeopardy! spinoff series.”
She also noted that this will be fun for all fans of the series while bringing a new twist to the beloved game show.
