Orenthal James Simpson was born on July 9, 1947, in San Francisco California. He had a remarkable career in the NFL, playing for both the Buffalo Bills and the San Francisco 49ers. He then went on to star in a number of popular Hollywood productions.

This morning, O.J. Simpson’s surviving family members tweeted that he lost his battle with prostate cancer. They wrote,

“On April 10th, our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer. During this time of transition, his family asks that you please respect their wishes for privacy and grace. -The Simpson Family.”

The family also promptly restricted responses, likely to prevent trolls and naysayers from harassing them during their grieving period.

How Much Was The Former NFL Star Worth At His Time Of Passing?

Although O.J. Simpson was acquitted of the murders, he did ultimately have to pay the families $33,500,000 in damages after they filed wrongful death claims against him. He reportedly had paid little of that sum as of the time of his death. But that’s not where his financial woes ended.

In 2007, he found himself in trouble with the state of California. The state claimed he owed a whopping $1.44 million in back taxes. Simpson also found himself in the midst of a wide range of other legal battles, including his 2007 robbery case. He was released from prison in 2017.

Despite his ongoing legal challenges, Celebrity Net Worth estimates that Simpson was worth approximately $3 million when he died last night. He also made a significant amount of money from his football career, acting career, and brand endorsements from the peak of his fame.

Stylecaster reports that Simpson demanded $650,000 for a five-year contract when the NFL drafted him. At the time, that was one of the highest professional sports salaries.

The publication goes on to say that Simpson’s net worth at the time of the murder trial was approximately, “$10.8 million (around $18 million today) in court documents. A majority came from his Brentwood estate that he bought in 1997 for $650,000. In settlement terms of their divorce, OJ’s monthly income in 1992 was $55,000 after his brand deal with Hertz.”
