Joey Graziadei has been engaged for a few months. But he had to keep it a secret from the world until the Bachelor season finale aired. Viewers watched on Monday as he got down on one knee and proposed to Kelsey Anderson. His other contestant, Daisy Kent, had broken up with him moments earlier after realizing his stronger connection with Kelsey.
Keeping your relationship a secret can take its toll. However, Joey and Kelsey did whatever they could to keep their relationship strong, including couples therapy. During a post-engagement chat with PEOPLE magazine, the pair credited therapy for saving their relationship.
The help was provided by the Bachelor show and ABC. Joey admitted that they had trouble with communication when they weren’t physically together. “We communicate so much better when we’re actually with each other in the same room,” he said. But couples counseling helped with that.
Therapy “made a huge difference for us to not only be able to find better ways to communicate, but also learn how each of us communicate differently,” Joey told the outlet.
He added that what they learned in the virtual counseling sessions will “help us in the future.”
Joey and Kelsey aren’t the first Bachelor Nation couple to go to therapy early in their relationship. Season 27 winner Kaity Biggar that she also uses couples therapy to navigate her relationship with Zach Shallcross.
When Will They Marry?
Joey Graziadei and Kelsey Anderson aren’t rushing to the altar. In fact, his ex, Charity Lawson, may get married long before he does. The Season 28 couple plan a long engagement, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t already planning for the future.
They plan to spend the summer in her native New Orleans before moving to New York City. Joey kept a piece of New Orleans with him throughout filming. During the introductions on the first night, Kelsey presented him with a voodoo doll to symbolize her hometown.
He confessed to PEOPLE magazine that he kept the doll with him through the entire season. “I took it with me everywhere we went, because I had a pretty good idea that she was going to be around,” he said.
