Former AGT winner Darci Lynne is attempting to prove to America that she has done a lot of growing up since making waves as a 12-year-old ventriloquist.

In 2017, Darci Lynne shocked everyone when she was crowned the winner in America’s Got Talent’s 12th season. Lynne became the second youngest winner in the show’s history. Singer Bianca Ryan won AGT’s inaugural season in 2006. Lynne beat out singer Angelica Hale and dance troupe Light Balance to secure her win.

Seven years after her victory on AGT, Lynne is now hoping to show her fans that she’s more than that little kid from 2017.

Darci Lynne’s Transformation Is ‘Crazy For A Lot Of People’

Although it’s been years since she showcased her impressive skills as a ventriloquist on AGT, she says that most people are shocked to see her today. In a recent interview with People, Lynne admitted that fans still expect that girl from Season 12. “It’s crazy for a lot of people,” said Lynne. “They all have that 12-year-old in mind whenever my name comes up. And so now it’s like, ‘Oh my gosh, she’s growing up.’”

Despite her success as a ventriloquist, Lynne is aiming to remind people about her ability as a vocalist. “My mantra is I don’t want to be put in a box or limited in any way,” says Lynne. “Singing always came first. Singing is what I grew up doing as long as I can remember. And then the ventriloquism came around. Now I’m able to step out and be more confident in my own skin without the puppet. I think it was always kind of meant to go down this road.”

As she evolves as an artist, Lynne wants to share her experiences as a young adult. “All these songs that I’m writing are about everything I’m going through right now,” says Lynne. “I’m still experiencing things that I think a lot of other 19-year-olds do.”

AGT Winner Darci Lynne Releases Her Single ‘Push Our Luck’

Stepping away from her puppets, Darci Lynne believes that she has much more to offer as an artist. While describing her new single ‘Push Our Luck,’ Lynne wanted to relive one of her early romances. “I met this one boy that I really liked, and we went out on a date for the first time,” she recalls. “When I lived with my parents, my curfew was always midnight, and I really did try my best to respect that.”

Being able to tell the story of a young whirlwind romance was important to Lynne. “I wanted the song to paint that picture so clearly,” says Darci Lynne.  “Everyone’s been there and had those first-time feelings, and it’s just so much fun. And the curfew thing just kind of gets in the way of that. There’s that internal conflict. You’re going to be in so much trouble, but you stay out anyway because you are just having so much fun.”
