Joy Behar is often in the hot seat on The View. She does not let anyone tell her what to say or do and follows whatever beat she chooses. This is one of the benefits of having been on the show since its inception, despite a brief hiatus away. Plus, she is the eldest of the bunch so she is just settled in with who she is. At this point, there has been a lot of chatter as to whether or not Joy will retire soon. Behar has a lot on her plate off-camera and has toyed with the idea of eventually working behind the scenes.

Speaking of BTS, the show has its very own podcast, The View: Behind the Table. According to The Sun, show EP, Brian Teta chatted with the ladies and had a vital question. He wanted them to think about the moment that truly changed their lives. For Joy, it was an ectopic pregnancy that caused a terrifying ER experience. She explained this:

“I thought I was gonna be dead. The friggin doctor was out playing golf. I’m pleading internally, screaming, ‘Help me, I’m dying!’ I was. Literally, I thought I was dying.”

So, what exactly is an ectopic pregnancy? Per WebMD, it is defined as this:

“Usually, a fertilized egg attaches itself to the lining in your uterus. But with an ectopic pregnancy (also called extrauterine pregnancy), the fertilized egg grows outside your uterus.”

More so, they are quite common as 1/50 of women will experience them and the sad thing is, the egg can burst with this being life-threatening. As for Joy Behar, to keep her alive, her fallopian tube was removed.

“They wheeled me into the OR (Operating Room), the doctors not there yet. I said, ‘Give me something!’ I was in such pain. So that’s the end of that. They save me, I live. I’m minus a fallopian tube. It’s okay, I can live without it.”

Better Now But That’s Her Story

Yes, Joy Behar had to sacrifice her fallopian tube to be alive but not her wit not her sense of humor. As horrific as that was, she realized she needed to look at life through new lenses. Finally, she started to live for herself and even got a divorce. Joy seems to have found her sweet spot in life as she got married again in 2011 and is doing things on her terms.

Are you surprised to hear about her medical emergency? Or, had you known about this prior? Let us know in the comments and watch The View weekdays on ABC.
