Bill Hayes joined Days of Our Lives as Doug Williams in 1970. He played the character off and on for over 50 years as the storyline ebbed and flowed. The actor has been appearing regularly since 1999.
Shortly into the new year, news broke that the long-time soap star had passed away.
Bill Hayes often sang on the show as Doug Williams. But many fans might not know that the actor is a chart-topping singer himself! His song “The Ballad of Davy Crockett” topped the charts in 1955.
After the news of his passing, soap fans took to Twitter to share their favorite memories of Bill Hayes as Doug. Many of those memories included Julie Williams, played by the actor’s real-life wife Susan Seaforth Hayes.

Bill Hayes’ Final Days Of Our Lives Airdate Revealed
Doug and Julie’s Christmas tree trimming is something DOOL fans look forward to each year. Bill and Susan Seaforth Hayes were both on the soap’s 2023 holiday episodes.
Monsters & Critics note that the Horton family Christmas ornament hanging episode was the last episode featuring Bill Hayes. Was that the last time viewers would see him on the soap?
Amy Shaughnessy, who is the niece of Charles Shaughnessy (Shane Donovan,) shared on social media that Bill Hayes filmed more episodes before his death.
According to her, Doug Williams will be back on screen soon. Viewers will last see Bill Hayes in an episode scheduled to air July 11th. The date is significant because it also happens to be Susan Seaforth Hayes’ birthday.

Susan Seaforth Hayes Pays Tribute To Her Late Husband
Doug and Julie Williams married and divorced on the soap opera multiple times. However, Bill and Susan Seaforth Hayes had been married for many, many years. The couple married in 1974 after meeting on DOOL.
She took to their joint Instagram account after his passing to thank fans for their support. “To all of you who honored my Billy with a word of remembrance, a sense of personal loss, or even a tear- I thank you,” she wrote alongside photobooth images from early in their marriage.

The soap has yet to reveal how they will write Doug Williams out, but they will likely have him pass away as they did with Victor Kiriakis when actor John Aniston died.
