Netflix’s ‘American Nightmare’: How Police Botched The Case
American Nightmare is the name of a true-crime three-part docu-series that was recently added to Netflix’s streaming library. As subscribers dive into the docu-series and learn what happened, they wonder how the police managed to botch the case so severely. More specifically, why were police so convinced Aaron Quinn was lying? Furthermore, could the outcome have ended differently if they had just believed him?
American Nightmare: How Police Botched The Case
After watching American Nightmare on Netflix, some subscribers wonder how differently things could have ended if the police responded better to Aaron Quinn’s pleas for assistance.
Back in 2015, Aaron Quinn and his girlfriend Denise Huskins were startled away by armed intruders. They put blackout swimming goggles over their eyes and tied them up with zip ties. Then, they shoved them in the closet. When the intruders left, they took Denise Huskins with them. After Aaron Quinn was able to free himself, he called the police and begged for help.
Unfortunately, getting help from the police did not go the way he thought it would. Turns out, the officers did not believe him. Furthermore, they suspected he murdered Denise Huskins. So, they brought him in for questioning. The officers spent 18 hours trying to get Aaron to confess. They wanted him to confess to something that he not only did not do, but it never happened.
While police investigated him instead of helping him, his girlfriend was held captive and raped by her kidnapper.
Did Denise Huskins Survive?
Two days after her abduction, Denise Huskins resurfaced. She was discovered outside of her family home. While this moment should have been relieving, it only made investigators more suspicious. Now, they were suspicious of both Aaron and his girlfriend. The investigators argued there was no evidence to support what the couple claimed happened. Then, they quickly spun the story to make it seem as if the couple made everything up.
Aaron Quinn was happy to have his girlfriend back. However, the way the investigators handled the situation ruined their lives. They spent months trying to move past the trauma and just move on with their lives. Unfortunately, they struggled to find work. The police claimed they lied about what happened. So, no one wanted to hire them.
Talking to People Magazine, Aaron Quinn hopes the docu-series shines a light on how poorly the investigation was handled.
