Hugh Hefner’s Widow Opens Up About His Drug Addiction
Crystal Hefner, the widow of Playboy founder Hugh Hefner, claims that her late husband dealt with a crippling drug addiction.
In her upcoming memoir, Only Say Good Things: Surviving Playboy and Finding Myself, Crystal Hefner reveals the trials and tribulations she faced inside the Playboy Mansion. “At the time I thought I was on top,” Crystal told People in a January 18 interview.
Crystal says that she first met Hugh at a Halloween party at the Playboy Mansion in 2008. According to her, she then moved in with Hugh the very next day. At the time, Crystal was just 22 years old. In an October 2009 interview with The Fulton Critic, Crystal admitted that she had no idea what her next move was going to be. “The other three girls were still living here when I first met Hef so I had no idea what was going on,” she said. “But it was so fun and I was just living for the moment. Now I’m here and it’s so much fun.”
15 years later, Crystal has opened up about her life inside the Playboy Mansion.
Hugh Hefner Struggled With Serious Drug Addiction
In her memoir, which is slated to be released on January 27, Crystal paints a grim picture of her late husband. Following the couple’s marriage in 2012, Crystal says that Hugh suffered a back injury. That injury led him to rely on painkillers to deal with the pain. After his original prescription ran out, Crystal reveals that Hugh found doctors to write him an endless stream of new prescriptions.
For Crystal, Hugh’s reliance on the painkillers became an open secret. After reading about overdoses throughout Hollywood, Crystal says that those closest to Hugh became concerned for him. “With so many celebrities dying of overdoses from doctors who gave them endless supplies, people around him got more careful, and the opiates had to be given to him like he used to give us allowance—in controlled doses,” she writes.
In the A&E docuseries Secrets Of Playboy, Hugh’s former girlfriend, Sondra Theodore, claimed that cocaine played a big part in life at the Playboy Mansion. “There were drugs everywhere,” she said. “John Dante was Hef’s best friend. He had a dog Louis — and this tiny poodle got hooked on cocaine. The dog could smell it from across the room. He had to lock that dog up when people were around. A very famous person walked into the house one night and that dog jumped off the couch and was licking her up the nose.”
Hugh Hefner Liked To Be In Control
Hugh Hefner’s drug addiction wasn’t the only thing that concerned Crystal during her relationship. She tells People that Hugh wanted complete control of the girls that came through the Playboy Mansion. Hugh would distribute allowances to his “girlfriends” that were to be used for cosmetic purposes.
According to Crystal, the women often had little say in how they looked. She reveals that Hugh had a very particular vision on their appearances. “Our nail polish couldn’t be anything but some neutral color, no French manicure,” Crystal says. “He would tell me ‘Wear the flag.’ That’s the Playboy logo and those shirts were uncomfortable and cheap.”
Hugh’s preferences often came with unwanted side effects. Crystal admits that Hugh often wanted her to dye her hair before her natural hair color showed through. “So I’d have to go bleach it and it would burn my scalp and I’d have blisters,” she says. “But for some reason, I thought this was all normal and that’s what it meant to be seen as beautiful in Hef’s eyes.”
