Sofia Vergara Butts Heads With Interviewer Over Her Accent
In a January 9 episode of the Spanish talk show El Hormiguero, Sofia Vergara confronted host Pablo Motos after he made fun of her accent.
The America’s Got Talent star was a guest on the show to discuss her upcoming Netflix series, Griselda. Despite mainly being known for her comedic side, Vergara will star in the gritty and drug-fueled drama. Vergara plays Colombian businesswoman Griselda Blanco, who created one of the most profitable cartels in history. She also serves as executive producer on the show. The Netflix Original premieres on the streaming giant on January 25.
Although Vergara was on El Hormiguero to promote her new show, the conversation hit a snag when Vergara’s accent became the topic of discussion. Motos interrupted her as she talked about her time on the sitcom Modern Family. Motos asked the actress, “How do you say Modern Family?” in English.
Sofia Vergara Defends Her Accent
Without skipping a beat, Vergara was able to turn the tables around on Motos. “I say it wrong? Oh, because you speak better English than me? Ah,” responded Vergara. After realizing that he may have bitten off more than he can chew, the talk show host attempted to move on.
However, Veragara was not finished with the discussion. “How many Emmy nominations do you have in the United States?” Vergara asked Motos. Before he was able to answer, Vergara fired off another question. “How many times did they nominate you at the Golden Globes?”

While at a Q&A with the cast of Modern Family at the Paley Center in 2015, Vergara was asked if she ever tried to lose her accent. “I did [try to change my accent] at the beginning [of my career],” Vergara said. “I hired someone, and I worked for months, and I spent a lot of money because it’s very expensive.”
Ultimately, Vergara realized that she was better off just accepting her accent as a part of her charm. “I was not doing a very good job in auditions, so I said one day, ‘You know what, I’m gonna try going the way that I can, and if I find a job, fine, and if not, it’s fine.’” Vergara said.
From Modern Family To Modern Crime Story
Despite her initial struggles with her voice early on, Vergara has made the most of her career. She is perhaps best known for her career-defining role in 2009, when she was brought on board the sitcom, Modern Family, to play Gloria. She then joined the judge’s panel on AGT in 2020.
In 2024, Vergara will take on the lead role in Griselda. While speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Vergara took the role because she saw a character who was more than a one-dimensional drug lord. “There are so many nuances to explore in terms of who she was as a drug lord and, of course, as a woman, as a mother,” she explains. “She was someone who did whatever it took to protect her family.”
When asked about whether or not fans will see the character Griselda or Sofia Vergara on screen, Vergara says she poured her heart and soul into the role. “I wanted no one to think of me or my last role,” Vergara says. “I wanted to get inside her head and really understand her mentality.”
