‘AGT’ Why Sheldon Riley Finally Decided To Unmask Himself
Ahead of the January 8 episode of America’s Got Talent: Fantasy League, Sheldon Riley has made the decision to finally unmask himself.
Australian singer Sheldon Riley has made a name for himself as being something of a mystery. A performer who hides behind his elaborate masks and costumes. But in the January 8 episode of America’s Got Talent: Fantasy League, Riley will shed his mask, which has become his trademark.
The 24-year-old singer has attempted to shed the mask before, but he was previously met with self-doubt. “America’s Got Talent was the first time that I really felt validated,” Riley said ahead of his AGT: Fantasy League performance. “They said that they loved me. They loved my voice. Then live shows came and it kind of just crumbled a little bit.”
Sheldon Riley Chooses To Unmask Himself
In a preview of his performance, NBC uploaded Riley’s rendition of “Tattoo” by Loreen. But before he had a chance to sing, Mel B announced her anticipation. “I am so excited for this performance that you’re about to do,” Mel B proclaimed. “Your voice is just incredible. But your story is what gets me. Like, it makes me fall in love with you even more.”
Riley kicked off his performance with strong vocals and an impressive visual display behind him. But it wasn’t until the midway point of the performance that sent the crowd, as well as the judge’s panel, into a frenzy.
The singer removed his black robe and then lifted off his mask to reveal his face. A moment that many of his fans have waited years for. After his performance was complete, Riley received a standing ovation. Mel B could hardly contain herself as she asked Sheldon Riley how it felt to finally unmask himself.
“So good,” Riley said as he smiled at the crowd. “So good.”
Sheldon Riley ‘Did Something Wonderful’
In addition to Mel B’s praise, Howie Mandel also applauded Riley’s performance. “My soapbox is life is mental health and the biggest hurdles that we have in life are the hurdles we have inside ourselves,” said Mandel on Riley’s performance. “I think you did something wonderful for the world.”
While speaking to Mel B in a video segment, Riley admitted his reliance on his mask. “AGT completely changed my life. I was a grand finalist at the Eurovision Song Contest. I’ve appeared in Vogue, Rolling Stone, and Billboard,” Riley said. “That’s kind of why I wanted to come back as well. I think the whole world as seen me in these masks for years and years.”
For Riley, his nerves were tough to overcome. But ultimately he believes that his voice is all he needs to win over his fans. “I’ve spent so much time trying to visually be enough for people that, maybe. The talent that I have is enough,” he said.
