TLC Exploits ‘Unexpected’ Teen Moms With Low Salaries?

TLC Unexpected is not the first show that has been questioned about exploitation. For example, The Blended Bunch brought a lot of kids who went through so much heartbreak. So, viewers slammed the network for making money from a sad situation.

TLC Unexpected  & Other Reality TV Shows Badly Paid?

1000-Lb Sisters fans believed the network exploited Tammy Slaton when the reality TV star was morbidly obese. Well, she turned that around, but after close to five seasons, she allegedly only took home between two to three thousand dollars per episode. It’s not clear how much she earned in Season 1, but it would have probably been less.

TLC fans also felt that the network exploited the death of Caleb Willingham. Reportedly, Tammy was angry about that, as well. Unexpected is also dramatic and sometimes sad, and some fans are convinced that teens get pregnant deliberately to earn a pittance and a bit of fame. Like the MTV shows, the network claims the stories reduce pregnancies, but no current statistics seem to support that.

Reality TV Stars Earn A Pittance – Exploited?

Tyra Boisseau and Alex were on the pregnant moms’ show for several seasons, and recently, she spoke about the income she earned in Season 1. On Reddit, an OP noted how little she claimed that she earned.

Tyra [Boisseau] said they made $425 per episode in season 1 & around $1000 per episode season 3. Crazy. She talked about it on her live this morning

Tyra Boisseau still went back for more TV time despite low pay. So, viewers of the show talked about it in the discussion that followed.

  • TLC definitely exploits the heck out of the participants on their shows.
  • Many of them are from really hick town places. That money probably goes a long way. Of course they should make more, but an unwed underage teenager that’s expecting a baby, it probably seems like a lot of money to them.
  • nobody loves locking minors into poorly paid strict contracts more than tv shows do.
  • They average 15 episodes per season at $425 x 15 that’s only $6,375 for the year. That’s not good in any stretch of the imagination for a new parent. Not worth national exploitation/scrutiny either They also don’t get paid for the episode until it airs on TV.
  • Their flagship show 90df only pays couples $1k per episode. And when the foreign partner is on their k1 they don’t get paid anything only the American does.

Do you think that teen moms are exploited for very little cash? Or, are they no different from most of the reality TV shows on the network? Do you agree that to a young person with the potential of getting good social influence, it might still be worth it?
