Immediately after the When Calls The Heart Season 10 finale episode “Starry Nights,” Reddit fans call the long-running Hallmark series “ruined.” The season ended with a shocking twist. Lucas and Elizabeth split, just as he left town. That has certainly shocked #LucaBeth fans.

However, fans of WCTH are outraged that the characters in the series based on the Janette Oke books are no longer recognizable. Some do not even have an interesting story to follow. Moreover, they blame the new showrunner Lindsay Sturman, and her team.

What did these Hearties say?

When Calls The Heart Fan Outraged, Says ‘Show Is Ruined’

WCTH fans are outraged. Although When Calls The Heart Season 10, Episode 11 entitled “Long Time Running” was the big series bombshell, Hearties have found other issues with the season.

On Reddit, one viewer wrote a long missive listing all of the problems with the series. Giving it the title “This Show Is Ruined,” the writer revealed, “My wife and I are done. This new showrunner is an idiotic.”

They then listed all of the problems with this season, starting with Elizabeth. “Elizabeth has been turned into a feckless, totally selfish nitwit of a twit.” They mentioned how the past few seasons were “thrown away.” Then, they added how neither Lucas nor Nathan deserved the “shabby treatment” she gave them. This included not correcting the kids that this split was mutual. She let them believe that her heart was broken, not the other way around.

This Heartie also added that during the entire WCTH Season 10, Elizabeth stared “into space like a confused high schooler” after talking to either Nathan or Lucas. They pointed out how she broke Nathan’s heart, but he won in the end. Meanwhile, “Dumps Lucas when he needs her most.”

In the end, this poster wrote, “Cannot stand the character anymore.”

There were a lot of people posting their agreement with this Reddit user’s sentiments. However, they did not stop at Elizabeth.

Bill Avery Made Into ‘Impulsive Fool’ In When Calls The Heart Season 10

This Heartie Reddit poster did not stop at Elizabeth. The When Calls The Heart fan was shocked at how smart and savvy Bill Avery was so easily bamboozled by the blonde widow.

Bill was made into an impulsive fool who sold his land on a whim to a woman who never even offered him any real encouragement.

Don’t Forget Hope Valley’s Guilt-Ridden Henry Gowan

This former When Calls The Heart fan also took a swing at Henry Gowen’s Season 10 storyline. “Henry acting like he’s borderline mentally ill with the guilt thing carried way too far. He’s stronger than he was portrayed, not a handwringing weakling”

Then they added that the rest of the Hope Valley townsfolk are “underutilized backdrop” citing that any one of them could make for “an interesting and compelling storyline.”

Hearties, are you also outraged? Did this poster miss anything? Share your frustrations in the comments below. WCTH Season 11 premieres in 2024.

  2. I agree with everything Georgia wrote in the article above and don’t have much to add. I am glad to see I am not the only one who was disturbed by Elizabeth’s change in character and unexpected, crazy behavior. I have posted my disfavor on other FB and most people seem to be happy with the Nathan/Elizabeth story line. I am trying to be open minded and will watch the beginning of the new season and see how it goes. For now, something seems “off” to me and if the story line doesn’t go the way I want it to, I won’t be watching. Elizabeth is the central character driving the show and if her character and storyline don’t improve, I think I as well as many others will stop watching. It is becoming too “soap operaish” and is losing its charm. Something is different and I don’t know if it because of the new show runner. Erin is the producer so if she loves playing the part of Elizabeth perhaps, she can do something.

    1. What is occurring on the show does happen in real life all the time. People change, people make choices for all kinds of reasons. There were just as many people that didn’t see her picking Lucas, but we continued to watch because we love the characters and their stories. It is a show. If you don’t continue to watch your loss.

      1. It’s NOT JUST ABOUT LUCAS.

Did you not read the article? Do you not see the comments about the other characters?

Are you OK with the fact they took the show’s only Asian character and completely degraded her? She WAS an accomplished pharmacist and so confident she confronted her abuser last season, and now she is making mud masks, rubbing temples, and meek and quiet—a match for Hickam? Really?

Bill is easily hoodwinked by a bombshell blonde, when he quested Lucas for three seasons (and both he and Nathan questioned him LAST SEASON)?

        Come on.

  3. Not all fans are “outraged.” We love this show and its wonderful actors/characters. Elizabeth is accused of “acting out of character.” No, she isn’t. She is acting like a woman who has been through a lot and is just now coming to understand that the safe route is not the way to go if she wants to be happy. I’ve seen a lot of “if the story doesn’t go like I want it” posts. Good grief folks, it’s a TV show. It’s not tailor made to how we want it. They are telling a story. We have not always liked the way it has gone, but we watch anyway, because we love the show. We would appreciate less negativity and more support for these awesome actors, writers, directors, camera persons, producers, etc. Cannot wait for Season 11!

    1. I totally agree with you. And for people saying the show doesn’t follow the storyline in the books, it says the program is BASED ON the books. That doesn’t mean it’s going to be exactly like the books. There are so many interesting characters and storylines in this show. This was their best season yet, and I’m really excited to see where the next season takes us!!

    2. Were you there when others getting married had second thoughts? Elizabeth went and comforted them, supported them. Not gave them excuses to walk away. She gave them reasons to go on, three people .. three marriages. Rosemary did not do that for her, Nathan did not do that for her. He gave her the garbage about the children would miss her. How many school children moved on without Elizabeth? Rosemary came out with the “safe” crap. How many friends have moved away? What will Elizabeth do if Rosemary moves?

  4. I have come to the WCTH for the uplifting, community oriented & soul nourishing experience that other shows do not offer. My soul feels a bit battered after the shows last 2 episode. They have taken the most beautiful fictional love story ever told and stomped on it.
Two characters who were respectful, loyal & truly dedicated to one another broke up with a one minute goodbye and zero remorse. What’s more, the show’s primaries are on the media saying that it’s most beloved character did this bc her heart is with another man on the show.
Instead of feeling uplifted by purity of the character, this season leaves my soul morally battered. Sincerely, Saddened Fan

  5. What happened was a poorly executed retcon. The season didn’t even make sense within itself. Carpe Diem – Seize the day and be open to new experiences? (Unless of course it requires you to actually do something selfless such as support your fiance and move out of the rowhouse). ‘You’ve been given a second chance at love, hold onto it with everything you have,’ (Unless the emotional affair you’ve been having decides to try to change your mind just as your fiance’ has taken on a role to save the town that is more important to you than he is). Very poor, shallow, contradictory writing and mean.
Lindsay Sturman didn’t just break up LucaBeth, but she sullied all of our beautiful memories by revisiting their special places and placing them in clothes worn on certain occasions only the attach negative associations with them. The whole season was like a bad Team Nathan fanfic and I refuse to count it as part of canon. It was depressing and left its audience feeling bad after every episode (unless you were TN in which case storyline continuity did not matter so long as she wound up with the Mountie).

Lindsay Sturman has destroyed When Calls the Heart because she destroyed its heroine. Elizabeth’s moral ground has been taken from underneath her and she has been turned into a shallow, insincere, disloyal, cowardly, neurotic, fickle traitor. She pawns her kid off on anyone available, even leaving him with the school kids while she ran through town trying to find the man who was not her fiance. She is not an honorable woman, and her relationship with Rosemary is codependent and icky.

Other characters were also out of character. Lucas was too passive toward Elizabeth. Nathan was practically stalking her at times. Bill was turned into a clueless schoolboy pining after a woman much younger than him instead of being the rugged Mountie investigator he always was. Rosemary was WAY out of line in her interference with where Elizabeth lives (and Elizabeth’s line that living with Lucas anywhere but that rowhouse would not be ‘home’ as well as her line to Rosemary ‘what matters is friends and neighbors’ shows how far this once great show has fallen. It’s just another soap now and they can keep the retconned version. I will not be watching.

At least we had 9 good seasons.

    1. Great comment Janine. You hit the entire RetCon and pit it in its place … the dumpster. BB keeps saying it is not a RetCon, however it is covering up for terrible writing. Most of the dialogue made absolutely no sense at all, especially the conversations of Nathan, Elizabeth and Rosemary. Then to top it off, Elizabeth had call Lucas in Capital City …. What for? To rub in her terrible 30 second break up? So tacky!!She described a woman to be admired, she is everything that Janine described her as. OH plus she is a liar. She let that entire town think it was Lucas that broke up with her then left her – EVERYONE!!! I won’t be watching either. I don’t feel like I am betraying the program, I believe they betrayed the fans they made promises to!!!

  6. I, for one, am not amused! The message that I got was that everything they’ve been telling us for the last 2 seasons was a lie. That’s crazy to me. That’s why so many fans are calling BS.

  7. This is a very one-sided article. For every person upset, there are just as many (or more) who really enjoyed the season and thought it dealt beautifully with complex themes of grief. That should’ve been represented.

  8. The show is not ruined for everyone, there’s a saying, You can’t please all the people all the time. Well on that not there are some people that can’t ever be pleased. Don’t base the success by those people please…

  9. Done with when calls the heart! Deleted my Hallmark app today. Lucas & Elizabeth’s chemistry was the best! Of course Hallmark had to ruin it with all their dumb twist and turns!!! Bye bye Hallmark and when calls the heart!

  10. How far this series has come from the truly good story that started 10+ years ago. it has now become just another corny Hallmark tripe. Smart woman goes to small town, meets noble savage and within 3 days they fall in love, live happily ever after until the end of the show. And according to the way they are treating a beautiful romance between a kind and smart man (Lucas) being dumped for emotionally stunted noble savage (Nathan), one has to wonder how many of those happily ever after stories of Hallmark are just divorces waiting to happen.

What made this story so great in the beginning was it was so believable. Is this new storyline just seems like an unlikely remake of the first love of another Mountie.

The shallowness of this latest twist makes a mockery of everything. People are saying the Mountie was the risk. Hardly, he is the predictable choice, as if Elizabeth is only made for Mountie.

The over acting by some was somewhat palatable when the story lines were more interesting, now really just seems like daytime soap opera.

I just hope they have the decency to bring someone into Lucas’ life who is worthy of his loyalty and kindness.

I can’t imagine this show making it another season.

    Shallow
